Lindsay Lohan jail saga turned into porn.

She's only been in the clink 24 hours but Lindsay Lohan's prison drama has already been turned into a porno, which probably has better production values than any of her own upcoming films... To be honest, she probably would've agreed to star in it herself if only the crew could've waited until her release. Of course, though, Lindsay 's currently doing lines for her own porn film, Linda Lovelace biopic Inferno, which features quotes such as: I was put on the earth for one thing and one thing only, sucking a footlong cock!" and: I once took a pro-football team - and I don't just mean two at a time - I mean more!" The film's director Mat Wilder's has confirmed that they'll wait until Lohan's release at the beginning of August before filming, when she'll be able to slip out of the orange jumpsuit and everything else, for he added: "There'll be full frontal nudity. But it's not a porn movie. It's an artistic movie about a porn star."

GOP senators move to block FCC on Net neutrality.

Seven Republican senators have announced a plan to curb the Obama administration's push to impose controversial Net neutrality regulations on the Internet. On Wednesday, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and six other GOP senators introduced legislation (PDF) that would dramatically limit the Federal Communications Commission's ability to regulate broadband providers. "The FCC's rush to takeover the Internet is just the latest example of the need for fundamental reform to protect consumers," DeMint said in a statement. Without this legislation, DeMint said, the FCC will "impose unnecessary, antiquated regulations on the Internet." The new bill--called the Freedom for Consumer Choice Act, or FCC Act--doesn't eliminate the FCC's power over broadband providers. But that power would be narrowed in scope, and come to resemble the antitrust enforcement power of the Department of Justice.

Mozilla prepares second Firefox 4 beta launch.

The second beta of Firefox 4 is tentatively set to land tomorrow and ahead of that Mozilla has been asking testers to offer feedback about the open source outfit’s latest browser. On Monday Mozilla ran some tests for the Firefox 4 beta 2 code freeze. It found four low-risk bugs still present in the build, but none of those were enough to put a hold on proceedings, according to Mike Beltzner. However, he later urged a little more caution about the next beta. Here’s where things stand: - bug 557225 resulted in less-than-ideal hangs on startup on OSX; bsmedberg is currently testing a fix - bug 580227 was filed for Test Pilot which wasn't fixed after the XPCOM changes; a patch is awaiting review from dtownsend - bug 579262 remains, but at this point I don't think we'll block beta2 on it, instead adding a release note; visible regression on some YouTube videos, though, so people may have opinions that they wish to share on that score. He added that there were also two non-code related bugs to fix in the second pre-release version of Firefox 4.

Poles race up porn.

Poles are racing up the world porn league — with a whopping 85 per cent of them admitting to logging on to naughty internet sites. The kinky country views more raunchy websites than Brits, Italians, the French and Scandinavians — but psychologists say it is NOT due to a porn addiction. Instead boffins say the obsession with the saucy sites is down to poor sex education. Research carried out by US group Alexa shows that Polish internet users are the fifth largest audience of RedTube — one of the largest porn websites in the world. And RedTube is more popular in Poland than the trendy social networking site grono.net. Sexy bank worker Anna Nowacka, 29, admits: "Before work I have enough time to look at my favourite porn page. After work, I'll look again. Every day.

The Middle Men are Pioneers Once Again, Bringing the Mainstream to Porn.

For years the porn industry had been riding the backs of Hollywood movies, exploiting them for story-lines and brands for the making of their own porn parodies. It was a one-sided deal as Hollywood wouldn’t be able to do the same as no one would be interested in the non-sexual version of Deep Throat or Debbie does Dallas (which I guess would have been called Debbie visits Dallas and Has an Okay Time.) And so, the Hollywood studios had to make do with the occasional porn-related bio-pic and the odd documentary, knowing full well that they’d probably not be blockbusters, as their target audience is limited due to MPAA ratings. For the large part, Hollywood gave in and officially avoided the porn industry. And then, lo and behold! A revolution.

Malta: Pornography laws.

In their attack on Article 208 of the Criminal Code, the Front Against Censorship has suggested a legal clause which allows for the distribution and production of pornography as long as it does not involve human trafficking, the abuse of minors, the exploitation of the human person or any other criminal acts defined by law. It is a well-known documented fact that children are involved in the production of pornography and it is impossible to validate the ages of some of these actors. The Front's proposals at first glance seem to be praiseworthy but just how exactly can anyone guarantee that a woman is not being used as a prop for sex and that she has not been coerced into the making of a porn movie? How does one determine whether a woman apparently willingly taking part in consensual acts in a porn movie has not actually been bought from international human traffickers? And just how is pornography any better for society even if it is a little "cleaner"? Laws are only effective if they can be enforced.

Designing Websites for iPhone Viewing.

How would your website look on a hand held device? Is it easy to navigate? Is the most important information readily available to your visitors? Is your website "mobile Web" ready? Ten years ago most small business owners didn't have a website and probably didn't see the need for one. Now, a business without a website is considered second rate at best. A website is a necessity for doing business in the 21st century. Also a necessity in the 21st century is a website that can be easily viewed on a hand held device. According to the latest statistics, only 11% of Americans are getting their news and information using the browser in their mobile phone. That doesn't seem too impressive until you look at the enormous popularity of Apple's new iPhone and realize that "the times, they are a changing." In the next few years, the popularity of surfing the net on your mobile Web is going to skyrocket.

Sex tape is fake says Katrina Kaif.

A few months after her sister Isabel was embroiled in a sex tape controversy, which was being circulated in her name but actually featured a look-a-like, Katrina Kaif is now the target of a similar online craze. Not surprisingly, Katrina has issued a denial. Porn sites and forums have been going gaga over the clip featuring a Katrina look-a-like. The clip has been tagged Katrina Kaif sex scandal in a bid to garner most hits. It has reached the download limit on a couple of portals. The actress said in a statement: "The video is disgusting and the girl clearly doesn't even look like me. There's no room for any speculation whatsoever. How can you even call her my lookalike? The girl's face is completely different! I think it's ridiculous to even talk about it."

First control system worm sparks concern.

The security world is aflutter over new malware that has been spreading via USB devices and is programmed to steal data from systems running specific software used in utilities and industrial manufacturing plants. There are a lot of moving parts to this story so we've decided to break them down and tell you what is happening and how it impacts you. What is the malware exactly? The attack involves several components: a worm that spreads via USB drives and exploits a previously unknown vulnerability in Windows and a Trojan backdoor that looks to see if an infected machine is running a specific type of software created by Siemens used in control systems including industrial manufacturing, utilities and even nuclear powered aircraft carriers. The worm, dubbed Stuxnet, propagates by exploiting a hole in all versions of Windows in the code that processes shortcut files, ending in ".lnk," according to a Microsoft Malware Protection Center blog post. Merely browsing to the removable media drive using an application that displays shortcut icons, such as Windows Explorer, will run the malware without the user clicking on the icons. The worm infects USB drives or other removable storage devices that are subsequently connected to the infected machine. Those USB drives then infect other machines much like the common cold is spread by infected people sneezing into their hands and then touching door knobs that others are handling.

'Gay zombie porn flick' pulled from Aussie film festival.

The Australian classification board has banned Bruce LaBruce's gay zombie flick L.A. Zombie from screening at the Melbourne International Film Festival, which opens Saturday, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. From his home in Toronto, LaBruce said he was “delighted” by the decision. “I'll never understand how censors don't see that the more they try to suppress a film, the more people will want to see it,” he said. “It gives me a profile I didn't have yesterday.” L.A. Zombie stars French gay porn star Francois Sagat as a schizophrenic gay zombie who believes he can bring the dead back to life by having sex with them. “People come back to life [in my film], it's a metaphor for healing,” he said. The board's director said the film refused classification. Festival officials have not announced if they would appeal the decision.

10 Missed Opportunities in Search Engine Marketing in Japan.

Japan is a highly developed "wired" country, has a similar e-commerce infrastructure, uses both Google and Yahoo, and is the global leader in blogs and 3G mobile usage. Yet the failure rate among multinational search marketers trying to succeed in Japan is by far the highest in the world. To really understand why it's so difficult, we first need to understand the missed opportunities that aren't so apparent. I found 10, but quickly ran out of room for this column, so we'll cover the first five today, then the remainder in my next column.

Russian spy Ana Chapman turns down porn offer.

Russian spy Ana Chapman is said to have turned down an offer to star in a porn movie. According to TMZ, Chapman rejected an offer from the world's largest porn film producer to star in one of its projects. Steven Hirsch, president of porn giant Vivid Entertainment, offered Chapman a potentially profitable movie deal because she was the "hottest spy they had seen for years". "Though she wasn't very successful as a spy, we think she can be a terrific actress in one of our upcoming feature films," News.com.au quoted Hirsch as saying in a letter to Chapman's US lawyer, Robert Baum. Hirsch also said that he was willing to send his top director to Moscow for the shoot. But a representative for Vivid Entertainment said that Chapman had "no interest in our offer or in adult films."

Blog Platform Shut Down as FBI Probes al-Qaida Posts.

Blogging platform Blogetery.com was cut off by its hosting company last week after the authorities said al-Qaida “terrorist material” was found on one of its servers, said a statement from web host BurstNET Technologies Monday. Blogetery, a platform for some 70,000 blogs, was taken down by BurstNET after the Federal Bureau of Investigation asked BurstNET “to provide information regarding ownership” of the server hosting Blogetery.com,” BurstNET said. BurstNET shuttered Blogetery at its own discretion, after concluding it was violating its “Acceptable Use Policy.” “It was revealed that a link to terrorist material, including bomb-making instructions and an al-Qaida ‘hit list,’ had been posted to the site,” BurstNET said. CNET said the material allegedly discovered by the FBI “is connected to an online magazine called Inspire,” whose mission is to recruit al-Qaida members. A message on Blogetery.com said, "Our server was terminated without any notification or explanation.” Attempts to reach the site’s operators were not immediately successful.

Paid Search Keyword Building the Smart Way!

New clients, potential clients, new hires, even vendor partners ask this question all the time. They're all looking for a magical tool that will take the tedium out of keyword building. But building a keyword list isn't the tedious part. The real drag is finding landing pages and assigning each keyword to an effective ad group within a well thought out campaign structure. Although plenty of tools can spit out thousands of relevant keywords for your site, finding landing pages and ad groups is still a slow, extremely manual task with plenty of room for error (or at least inefficiency).

'Pornistan' title upsets Pakistan.

Most Pakistanis may be crying foul over their country being nicknamed "Pornistan" following media reports that it topped the list of porn searches on Google but a few admit to watching porn. "Yes. I have watched (and accessed) porn websites," an old bearded man confessed to DawnNews, which did a special report on Internet search trends in Pakistan. Even as the others grinned at the old man's admission, he said, "Perhaps they (Google) may be right. What's wrong with it? If I have watched it, then people like you may definitely have done much more... If people make porn websites, they make them to be watched". According to a FoxNews report that quoted Google Trends and Google Insights, Pakistan tops searches per-person for various forms of sex. After speaking to people in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta, DawnNews concluded that there may be "inaccuracies in Google Trends" and yet the trends are not altogether inaccurate. While most Internet surfers denied surfing cyberspace for porn or sex on camera, they were quite vocal once the camera was switched off.

New bill renews Internet privacy fight.

American businesses weren't very happy about a privacy bill that Rep. Rick Boucher announced in May. The Interactive Advertising Bureau, for instance, said the Virginia Democrat's draft legislation would have "major" effects on legitimate business practices. Well, if they disliked the Boucher bill, they're really going to loathe a new Democratic proposal that would slap even more extensive regulations on virtually any U.S. business. A bill introduced Monday by Illinois Rep. Bobby Rush, chairman of a House consumer subcommittee, would levy fines of up to $5 million on businesses and individuals unless they abide by a complex set of new regulations to be administrated by the Federal Trade Commission. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 11 a.m. PT.

Smart Social Media ROI: Show me the Money!

If you're spending money on anything these days, you need to know what you're getting out of it. That includes your company's involvement in social media. If you can't see it, you can't track it, so you might as well turn it off. Unfortunately, many marketers will leave the quest for cash and true ROI to faith by saying things like "we just need it," or "it's a branding effort" or "I can't show ROI because of XYZ." Although some of these may be true, smarter marketers will use correlations between web analytics metrics as signals indicating inevitable downstream revenue.

Playboy Enterprises Inc. has launched a nudity-free website it hopes will lure bored office workers who might be scared off by its more risque playboy.com site. TheSmokingJacket.com launched Tuesday and is aimed at Playboy's target audience of men 25 to 34 years old. The site won't include the nude photos, long interviews and in-depth articles found in Playboy magazine and on Playboy.com. Pirate Bay owners fined by Dutch court.

The three Swedish owners of The Pirate Bay will have to pay €50,000 a day for failing to shutter the service in the Netherlands, an Amsterdam Court ruled on Friday. The Swedish pirate site was ruled illegal earlier by the Dutch courts, but remained online because its servers are abroad. Lawyers representing The Pirate Bay co-founders, Peter Sunde, Frederik Neij and Gottfrid Warg, earlier argued that the three men no longer owned the notorious BitTorrent tracker site, and had sold the business to a Seychelles-registered company Reservella Ltd.

Flaw could expose 'millions' of home routers.

Millions of household routers are susceptible to a flaw that creates a handy means for hackers to hijack surfing sessions or hack into home networks. Craig Heffner, a researcher at security consultancy Seismic, is due to detail the flaw and release a proof-of-concept tool at the Black Hat conference in Vegas later this month. The DNS rebinding-related security flaw affects kit from Linksys Belkin and Dell, among others. DNS rebinding have been around for years. Heffner claims he has discovered a new variant of the theme, which initially involves luring a surfer into visiting a website containing malicious code. This code uses a "Jedi-mind trick" to circumvent the same-origin policy, thereby allowing JavaScript-based malware to penetrate private home networks supported by vulnerable hardware.

Mystery shrouds closures of blog, forum platforms.

Two services that enable users to blog or create online forums have disappeared from the Internet under mysterious circumstances. Blogetery.com, a blogging platform, went dark on July 9, less than a week before Ipbfree.com, a service that helped users create Web message boards, went offline. No one has said these situations are linked, but they nonetheless possess intriguing similarities. • Each of the services host loads of user-generated content. • Operators at both Blogetery and Ipbfree said they were shut down and aren't coming back. • Both said they obeyed copyright law. • In each case, those with knowledge of who ordered the closures or the reasons why said they are legally required not to disclose that information. "We are limited as to the details we can provide to you," BurstNet wrote to Blogetery's administrator. "Note that this was a critical matter and the only available option to us was to immediately deactivate the server."

Industry Reaction to the Stagliano Ruling Dismissing All Charges.

As news spread that all obscenity charges against John Stagliano and his companies had been dismissed by Judge Richard J. Leon, reactions have begun to be expressed by members of the industry. Christian S. Mann, general manager of Evil Angel Video, issued the following comment a short time after the ruling was announced. “Words fail to express how happy I am for John and for his wife, who has been going through this ordeal with him,” he said. “The spouses and families share the risk and yet they receive precious little acknowledgment. Additionally there are a lot of employees (myself included) whose livelihoods depend on this company. Trickle it down to directors and their crews and casts who derive some part of their living from John Stagliano/Evil Angel ... and it's evident the impact of this decision is significant. We're all very grateful for the expertise of the legal team, for John's willingness to stand behind his principles and to all who offered support and encouragement.”

SEO, the SERPs, and Your First Impression.

Web designers and usability experts dole solely in the interaction between a site and its visitors. These professionals take to heart the look and feel of site templates, content messages, and visual cues to ensure that the consumers of the site content will remain on pages longer and follow the intended purpose or funnel of the site. But what about how web searchers interact with your site, before they even hit the landing page? For those in the search engine optimization (SEO) world, it's difficult not to fall into the obsession toward keyword placement and rankings and to lose focus on the user experience. Several SEOs and online marketers have covered in-depth the ideology of writing for the engines as well as for users.

Actors who met on adult film set charged with killing tattoo shop owner with a sledgehammer.

Jason Andrews was a bisexual Chicago DJ with a British accent, whose chiseled jaw and good looks landed him roles in countless gay porn videos. Amanda Logue was a married, bleach-blond Georgia woman who once owned a lingerie shop, dabbled in prostitution and starred in several X-rated videos herself. Florida detectives claim that together they stabbed and bludgeoned to death a 41-year-old tattoo shop owner with a sledgehammer. They are also claimed to have hatched some of their plans in expletive-laden text messages. Using his BlackBerry, Andrews allegedly typed: 'I'm so glad you're really committed to this take. Keep eyes for a knife, etc for me!' Transcripts of the messages were included in court records. Logue replied in a nearly incomprehensible text that she was excited - and she wanted to have sex after they killed him. Nearly two months after Dennis 'Scooter' Abrahamsen was found dead in his Tampa-area home, Logue and Andrews have been charged with first-degree murder.

Astra drops German porn TV channels.

German media watchdogs got some satisfaction Monday when satellite operator Astra voluntarily shut off 30 hardcore pornography channels after protests from Germany's Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media (KJM). The porno channels were available unscrambled to Astra subscribers in Germany. According to the KJM, that violated German laws protecting minors from adult content on television. The KJM had no legal recourse, however, since Astra is based outside German jurisdiction in Luxembourg. But after talks with the KJM, Astra agreed to voluntarily drop the hardcore channels from its German channel bouquets. The company also pledged it would not add any more unscrambled porn channels to its German service.

China's press watchdog has threatened to shut down more than 120 websites offering pornographic fiction, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday. An official with the General Administration of Press and Publication said websites which failed to remove the content would be taken offline. The crackdown comes as China continues to tighten control over its booming Internet sector. Since the second half of last year, it has introduced new regulations on online pornography. Late last year China cracked down on mobile websites offering pornography downloads and more recently it barred online game companies from using lewd marketing tactics to attract users. China is the world's largest Internet market by users with around 420 million netizens

FriendFinder in $210m Playboy bid.

Florida-based FriendFinder Networks, owner of the Penthouse brand, has made a US$210m bid to take over rival adult entertainment giant Playboy Enterprises, and wants to keep Hugh Hefner at the helm. The move follows Hefner's announcement earlier this week he is to partner with Rizvi Traverse Management to take Playboy private, at US$5.50 a share. Hefner's bid values the company at US$185m, while FriendFinder has proposed to give Playboy shareholders US$6.25 a share. Marc Bell, CEO of FriendFinder, said his bid trumps Hefner's by at least 10% and proposed a meeting for July 21, 2010 to discuss the opportunity with Playboy management, including Hefner. The 84-year-old already owns 70% of Playboy's Class A common stock and 28% of its Class B stock.

Are We Over-Engineering the Link Graph?

"Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen, and keep your eyes wide for the chance won't come again... for the times they are a changing." - Bob Dylan OK, admittedly that's a rather grandiose opening for a case study (even for me). However, I want to give this piece a little temporal context and open with the position that it feels to me as if we're on the cusp of significant change. I'm not alone in thinking this. A good many of my peers and colleagues agree that there are signs, trends, announcements, changes, research, and anecdotes that point toward a potential shift. A shift in mindset certainly, and perhaps potentially a shift (or growth) in the number of ranking factors and most interestingly a "downplay" in the importance of previously held key ranking factors.

Squid sex pic pervert jailed.

A pervert has been jailed after being caught with a photo of a man having sex with a squid. Andrew Dymond, 46, was netted by police who found a haul of porn on his home computer. A court heard the sea creature was "clearly dead" in the picture, and a man is seen having sexual intercourse with it. Prosecutors amended the charge when it was admitted it could have been an octopus. Dymond was charged with possessing an image of someone "performing an act of intercourse with a dead animal, namely an octopus/squid, which was grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character". He pleaded guilty to a total of 25 porn charges, including possessing child porn and obscene snaps featuring other animals. Prosecutor Edward Moss said when arrested, Dymond told cops he looked at the images because he could not get "sexually aroused". Mr Moss said: "He hoped this would relieve his problem but it didn't." Dymond, of Mumbles, Swansea, was jailed for a total of four months.

The screwing of John Stagliano.

If you've been missing Richard Abowitz's dispatches from the obscenity trial of John Stagliano, correct your error and check in. Things are getting especially interesting, and especially disgraceful on the prosecution's side. The prosecution revealed that the case began when the Los Angeles Police Department Vice Squad sent themselves to the porn industry's biggest annual convention, Adult Entertainment Expo, in my home town of Las Vegas in 2007. Left unaddressed was why California law enforcement was working so far outside its jurisdiction, particularly given that Southern California is the production center of the porn industry. Similarly revealing was that after deciding to target Stagliano, whose residence and business do fall in L.A. County, Los Angeles police chose not to investigate him, and instead contacted the FBI's obscenity crew to step in. Defense attorney Paul Cambria in his opening statement suggested an explanation. The movies in question, he noted, "do not contain illegal sex acts." There were no depictions of force or violence. Every participant was a consenting adult. In other words, since Stagliano was not violating any California laws, the local vice squad, rather than respect his right to keep working legally, chose to punish him by tipping off the feds.

Porn Actress Wants Real Name Kept Secret in Obscenity Trial.

Her name is Lorelei Lee, and she’s a porn actress. Lorelei Lee, of course, is a stage name. Just like Traci Lords and Kayla Kleevage. Lee starred in one of the films—“Jay Sin’s Milk Nymphos”—that is the centerpiece of the government’s prosecution of adult film producer John Stagliano. Stagliano’s lawyers want to call Lee as a defense witness in federal district court in Washington, but there’s a problem: Lee doesn’t want to provide her real name. Lee’s lawyer, Carmen Hernandez, a solo practitioner in Maryland, filed court papers today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia asking for a protective order to allow her to testify using her stage name. Hernandez said Lee needs protection, but the attorney didn’t disclose in court documents the basis for the request other than saying that confidentiality will protect Lee from “explicit threats of danger.” The attorney said more information would be provided in a closed door hearing in the chambers of Judge Richard Leon. Hernandez was not immediately reached for comment.

Australia puts internet filtering system on hold for 12 months.

Article historyAustralia has rowed back on plans to introduce a wide-ranging mandatory internet filtering system, with communications minister Stephen Conroy saying a further 12 months is needed to review what content should be blocked in the country. Conroy announced plans in December that would force Australian internet service providers to ban access to any websites listed as "inappropriate." If implemented, the policy would make Australia one of the strictest internet regulators in the world. The move – which attracted widespread condemnation, not least from the majority of potentially affected ISPs, including Google and Yahoo – has now been put on hold for another year. "Some sections of the community have expressed concern about whether the range of material included in the RC [restricted content] category... correctly reflects current community standards," Conroy said. "As the government's mandatory ISP filtering policy is underpinned by the strength of our classification system, the legal obligation to commence mandatory ISP filtering will not be imposed until the review is completed.

7 Common Adsense Mistakes To Avoid If You Want To Make Money.

Contrary to what some may have you believe, making money with Adsense is not rocket science but it does require some good old fashioned work, knowledge and doing things a certain way so you comply with TOS ( Terms of Service ). Here are 7 common Adsense mistakes that publishers routinely make. 1) Too Many Ad Units - They use too many ad units thinking that 'more is better', but this couldn't be further from the truth. In actual fact having too many ads on your site makes it look spammy and your site actually ends up displaying lower paying ads to your visitors. Definitely not cool. 2) Ads That Scream 'Ad' - Publishers will often use the stock Adsense ad block colors with those green URL's that make many visitors instantly recognise it's an advertisement. They are used to seeing these colors and mentally associate the fact they are an ad. This can adversely affect CTR ( click through rate ).

‘Pornistan’ Pakistan is world leader in online sex searches.

They may call it the ‘Land of the Pure,’ but Pakistan ranks as the top country to proportionally search for certain sex-related terms on the web. The country that banned 17 websites to block offensive and blasphemous material is the world”s leader in online searches for pornographic material. “You won’t find strip clubs in Islamic countries. Most Islamic countries have certain dress codes,” Fox News quoted Gabriel Said Reynolds, professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Notre Dame, as saying. “It would be an irony if they haven’t shown the same vigilance to pornography,” she added. Its top searches include terms like ‘horse sex’, ‘donkey sex’, ‘rape pictures’, and ‘child sex’, as per information provided by Google. Pakistan is known to be very strict in banning anything that poses to be anti Islam, and so is porn, but no action seems to have been taken by authorities towards this new trend.

Internet groups sue Mass. over new obscenity law.

A coalition of booksellers and Internet content providers has filed a federal lawsuit challenging a new Massachusetts law that outlaws the sending of sexually graphic instant messages to minors. The new law was designed to close a loophole that prompted a court to overturn the conviction of a man accused of sending explicit instant messages to a 13-year-old. The court found that instant messages weren't covered by the state's obscenity law. The new law added instant and text messages, e-mail and other electronic communications. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, the American Civil Liberties Union and the other groups say the expanded law goes too far, allowing for the censorship of legal discussion, such as contraception and pregnancy, sexual health, literature and art.

The Fallacy of Search Engine Marketing Only.

As a leading search engine marketing company, we use the very same methods to boost our results as our clients. These methods include not only online efforts but those of offline as well. Far too many companies place all their trust in internet marketing methods without first weighing the benefit of integrating other initiatives, such as offline PR and direct mail campaigns. Learn what works and what doesn't. Allow me to offer a pre-emptive caveat - I own a successful search engine marketing company. Like most businesses, we are constantly trying to expand our client base - primarily through using the same search engine and internet marketing methods that we deliver to our clients. A quick search on terms such as "search engine optimization company" or "internet marketing company" on Google will demonstrate that we practice what we preach. As I write this, on a "clean machine" (one with all browser settings reset and cookies removed), my search engine marketing company ranks number 1 on Google for both of these phrases and the plural forms of the phrases. Based upon your past search tendencies, your specific location, and whims of the Google Gods, your mileage may vary, but you should find us near the top of the SERPs for those and hundreds of other related terms.

Stagliano Obscenity Trial: Testimony At Last!

Of course, the big news from the John Stagliano obscenity trial was the judge's ruling, shortly after noon, which if upheld by higher courts would set First Amendment jurisprudence back at least a half-century... but more on that later. Tuesday morning started out quietly enough, with Judge Richard J. Leon taking the bench at 11:05 a.m. and asking all counsel to identify themselves for the record. Prosecutor Pamela Stever Satterfield gave the first portent of things to come when, in response to a question from the judge as to how long she expected her first witness—FBI Special Agent Daniel Bradley—to take on the witness stand, she replied that she wasn't sure, since she didn't know whether she would be playing a full scene from one of the charged videos—Milk Nymphos and Storm Squirters 2—or only part of a scene. She even suggested that the court might want to take its lunch break in the middle of a scene and return to it later that afternoon.

Patch Tuesday sounds death knell for Win XP SP2.

Microsoft released the expected four security advisories on Tuesday, three of which earn the dread rating of critical. They collectively address five security vulnerabilities. There are two critical fixes for Windows in the batch, including an update designed to resolve a zero-day vulnerability involving Windows Help and Support Centre that's become a hackers' favourite over recent weeks. The vulnerability was controversially disclosed by Google staffer Tavis Ormandy prior to Microsoft providing a fix. July 2010's Patch Tuesday marked the last month Microsoft will issue patches for either Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Win 2000. Security watchers reckon a significant proportion of Windows machines are still running Win XP SP2. "Since Windows XP is still the most popular OS version for Windows, I believe we’re dealing with hundreds of millions of Windows XP SP2 systems that need to be upgraded," said Wolfgang Kandek, CTO of Qualys. "Our own monitoring shows that roughly 50 percent of all XP machines still run on the SP2 version. XP SP2 machines can be found both in corporate installations and are also very often the OS on home machines."

This year, “search neutrality” has become the rallying cry of activists who believe that Google has too much power to decide which internet sites are granted the attention that comes with a high search ranking, and which are consigned to outer darkness. After regulating the “pipes” of the internet with net neutrality, says Frank Pasquale, a professor at Seton Hall law school, “we need to look at the next part of the bottleneck, and that means search”. For now, there is no indication that Washington is interested in creating a regime to govern the search business, and the campaign has served mainly as a way for Google’s detractors to try to push it on to the defensive over other issues. But antitrust regulators have already begun to look this year into how the company’s core search ranking system works. The announcement this month of the $700m acquisition of ITA Software, a travel technology company, is now set to extend that further.

Aussie ISP refuses to filter for child porn.

Internode, the internet service provider, says that it will not join the Australian government's efforts to install a child pornography filter. The refusal, which deals a blow to hopes that the measure would be an industry standard, was based on Internode's concerns about the administration of the blacklist of child porn Web sites. The Australian Communications and Media Authority maintains the list of child porn Web sites, which add web addresses obtained from lists maintained by reputable overseas agencies. However, a blacklist maintained by the authority was leaked last year and was found to contain--in addition to the child abuse Web sites it was made to identify-- online poker sites, YouTube links, regular porn sites, and websites of fringe religions.

The Death of Natural Linking.

As readers of this column know, links play an incredibly important role in rankings. While a search engine can scan the contents of a web page and get a good idea regarding the topic of a web page, this isn't sufficient because it doesn't provide the right type of signals to indicate which pages are the most important ones for any given topic (i.e., of web pages on the same topic, who to rank first, second...). Links act like votes for a given piece of content, and as a result content with the best link profile usually does extremely well in the rankings for related terms.

Stagliano Jury Chosen.

Time may fly when you're having fun, but the 40 minutes the audience at the John Stagliano obscenity trial waited from the time court was supposed to begin (2:30 p.m.) until it actually began (3:10) seemed a lot longer. But by 5:00, the jury that will decide the fate of adult movie producer John Stagliano had been selected. Out of a panel of 46 potential jurors—it would have been 47, but apparently, one of the jurors never made it back from lunch—five men and seven women, ranging in age from about 30 to 55 years old, were chosen. The panel includes one white man and one white woman; the rest are African American

How To Write For Search Engines.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) writing, as a distinct style, was born in the Internet era and has matured before our very eyes in a relatively short span of time. Although it is evolving and maturing still, and will continuously do so, we can define some of the tried and tested steps of content optimization to help unique pages place at or near the top of search engine rankings. Some experts go on to say that the goal of SEO is two-fold, with the first objective to put out the appropriate "bait" for search engine spiders and the second to serve up useful information to people who want and need it. Debates about priorities continue among SEO professionals, but it is never a good idea to devalue the human factors in any success formula. The singular goal, then, would be to develop, position and refine content in such a way as to satisfy all visitors to the page and/or site, both human and bot alike.

From porn to Sudoku, dealerships grapple with misused computers.

IT consultant Erik Nachbahr has witnessed the computing environment get out of hand at some dealerships. Lots of dealers have no control over the PCs in their stores, says Nachbahr, president of Helion Technologies. Employees can install whatever software they want and go anywhere online. Comprehensive anti-virus programs are scarce. “It used to be eight or nine years ago, the big thing we talked about was porn,” Nachbahr told dealers last week at a workshop in metro Atlanta. “That still happens, too, which I’m always amazed by. But the big problem we see now is the time wasting.” Watch for illegal file sharing -- movie and game downloads. Nachbahr said he found a full-featured “World of Warcraft” setup on one dealership computer.

Hefner fights Penthouse for control of Playboy.

Octogenarian porn baron Hugh Hefner, still hoping to buy back his struggling Playboy empire, now faces a rival bid for the magazine from the owners of Penthouse. Marc Bell, chief exec of FriendFinder Networks, revealed last night he was working on a rival offer for Playboy's "great brand". Hefner first published Playboy in 1953 and owned the magazine outright until the year 2000 when Playboy Enterprises went public. Now aged 84, he retains 70 per cent of Playboy’s 'Class A' stock and 20 of its 'Class B' shares but announced on Monday he has teamed up with a private equity group to buy all the stock, valuing it at $5.50 per share.
