Personal details show up in a recent spam attack.

For this week's Security Watch column and Security Bites podcast, I spoke with Tod Beardsley, lead counter fraud engineer for TippingPoint, a provider of network-based intrusion prevention systems. The column and podcast talk about how social networking can be used for targeted attacks. Toward the end of the interview, I asked Beardsley what was the most interesting case he's worked on in the last six months. "In the last six months, there was a case involving the Better Business Bureau. This is public. The story there is that the Better Business Bureau keeps these databases of all the complaints they ever get. That's the big sell for them. If I complain to my local Better Business Bureau about some national company, someone else in Spokane, Washington, can reference that, through the Better Business Bureau up there.

GPL defenders say: See you in court.

A legal team enforcing the most widely used license in the open-source and free software movement has shown that it's not afraid to take its cases all the way to court. For years, violations of the General Public License, or GPL, have been met with quiet discussions to resolve compliance problems that can result when open-source software is used improperly. Now, however, the Software Freedom Law Center is taking a hard-line approach, filing a copyright infringement lawsuit against Monsoon Multimedia for allegedly failing to abide by requirements of the GPL.

Dot-Name Becomes Cybercrime Haven.

The company that controls the .name registry is charging for access to domain registration information, a step that security researchers say frustrates their ability to police the internet and creates a haven for hackers who run internet scams. When security researchers investigate spam and phishing activity on the internet, they rely on special Whois directories, which list the owner of a domain name, their hosting service and their contact information. They can use the information to track down who is responsible for a particular scam and to notify innocent webmasters if a portion of their site has been hijacked by black-hat hackers. ICANN, which sets the rules for the internet's top-level domain names such as .com and .net, has traditionally required registrars to make Whois data publicly searchable as a condition of the companies' right to sell domain names. But Global Name Registry, or GNR, which administers domain names ending in .name (that are intended for use by individuals e.g., johndoe.name), won the right to create tiered levels of Whois access, where public searches show very little information beyond what registrar sold the name and what name servers the site uses. The site sells five passwords, good for 24 hours only, for $2.
