Search Engines Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:53am EDT Keyword Research for Organic SEO. So you have decided to venture out into the world of SEO. The first thing you will need to do is determine the direction of your campaign in relation to the key phrases you are choosing to target. This article will focus on how to find keywords for your organic campaign, as the process is slightly different for PPC. Many site owners know immediately what phrases they want. If you feel like you know what you want, before you start take a brief step back and assess if this really is the best phrase for your site. Yes, it just may very well be the perfect phrase, but if it isn’t, you could wind up spending a lot of time and money pursuing a ranking that either will never happen, or will provide very little value to your site. There are a few key areas to look at when choosing a target phrase. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:52am EDT Five Strategies for Improving the Customer Experience. A good strategy starts with knowing your customers. What are they buying? What are their demographics? How do they make their purchasing decisions? Are their interactions with your company consistently good? At what point in your customer lifecycle are you at most risk of losing them? Are you listening to their complaints and ideas to continually improve your products and services? News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:50am EDT Cybersquatting escalates in Asia. Instances of cybersquatting are growing in Asia, fueled largely by the availability of inexpensive Internet domain names, according to a domain-name registrar. For example, China's ".cn" domains are now so inexpensive that it is encouraging the growth of cybersquatting, said Janna Lam, managing director of Singapore-based IP Mirror. In fact, IP Mirror currently acquires these site names from Chinese domain name registrar CNNIC.net.cn at such a low rate that the Singapore registrar is able to offer ".cn" site names for as low as $3 a year. "Cybersquatting has always been a (worldwide) trend and is now catching up in Asia," Lam said, adding that the main cause for this growth is the relatively low prices of the domain names. The U.S. Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act defines cybersquatting as the "unauthorized registration or use of trademarks as Internet domain names, or other identifiers of online locations." News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:49am EDT Vista is getting better … slowly. A lot has been written about how Microsoft released Windows Vista too early and with too many bugs to make is a feasible platform for people looking for a relatively hassle-free platform. If you liked being at the cutting edge then I’m sure you’d be happy to live with the bugs, but if happened to be looking a stable work platform, the general opinion was that it was best to stick with XP for a while. Now though, things are changing. Vista is getting better … slowly. Over the past few weeks we’ve not only seen a beta for the long awaited SP1 fall into the hands of a small pool of beta testers (of which I’m one), we’ve also seen a fair few compatibility, performance and reliability releases, specifically KB938979, KB938194 and KB941649. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:46am EDT Pamela Anderson and Rick Salmon tie the knot. Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson, 40, wed Rick Salomon, 38, her friend of fifteen years in a one and a half hour matter-of-fact ceremony held in between two of her performances Saturday night in Las Vegas at the Mirage Hotel. The Canadian born actress, model and sex symbol was watched by her children, members of her family and a small band of friends that included Tobey Maguire, Lukas Haas and Hans Klok, reports People. Clad in a white denim Valentino dress Anderson said "I do" for the third time, having earlier married and divorced Mötley Crüe drummerTommy Lee and singer Kid Rock. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:45am EDT Users' complaints to FTC show another side of Google. All they wanted from Google was $10. The Internet colossus had offered this enticement to people who signed up for its online payment service, Checkout - but some customers said they failed to get their promised credit. After losing patience with Google's customer service, several users acted: They filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission. "I feel that I was misled," one user from San Francisco wrote. The dustup over online offers is just one example of the discontent Google's growing legion of users have voiced to the agency responsible for enforcing consumer protection laws. Aggrieved, annoyed and occasionally misguided, users have lodged hundreds of complaints about everything from Google overcharging for advertising to returning pornographic Web sites when users search for their own names. The grievances highlight customer service challenges Google faces as it assumes an ever more important role in its users' lives. Dealing with hundreds of millions of people doesn't always go smoothly - even for a company with incredible global popularity. Site Development Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:44am EDT Checklist for Usability Forms. HTML forms are one way a user can send data to Web sites. They are essential in almost every interaction one can have with a site, such as: Queries on search engines Providing information (tags, comments, personal data, logins/registering, etc) Finding/purchasing certain objects from e-catalogs. In most cases, forms usability will improve the usability of the entire site. The primary goal of form usability is making sure that the intended users are able to interact properly with the Web site while having a positive and convenient experience. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:43am EDT Somehow, it seems odd that the pornography industry has escaped the exploration of serious photography for so long. By its very nature, the skin industry always has had all the important elements of a great photographic project. There's money. Some estimate that porn produces $13 billion in annual revenue, though that figure was recently questioned by Newsweek, which thinks a smaller number is more accurate. There's a fascination factor. People on the outside, including many who would never consider purchasing pornography, cannot help but wonder about the industry's cast of uninhibited characters. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:43am EDT Adult business opens in Staunton. The neon “open” sign at After Hours Video was lit by noon today. Owner Rick Krial said the adult business on Springhill Road opened about 11 a.m. Krial said about a dozen customers filled the store within minutes of opening. “We’ve been bombarded with people,” he said. “If nobody came in here and bought anything, I would go out of business.” Krial said he originally planned to wait until mid-week to open the store because he is still waiting for some of his merchandise to arrive, but opened early because of customer demand. The store has about 2,000 videos, Krial said. A cardboard sign next to the cash register says “Over 1,200 more videos arriving Monday.” Eventually, the store will have around 7,000 products, Krial said. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:42am EDT Only way to really trash data is to destroy the hard drive. There are many reasons for wanting to delete data off of your computer's hard drive. But sometimes, you haven't really gotten rid of it. Recent news stories, for example, have described how local executives got into hot water when data they thought was gone was, in fact, still there. So whether you're donating your PC to charity or surreptitiously deleting porn or confidential financial information, there are a few steps you should follow to make sure the data on your hard drive is really unrecoverable. Can't I just drag the files to the trashcan and empty it? Well, no. The crux of the problem is that deleting files in this manner doesn't really erase the information. What gets deleted is the information that tells your operating system where to find the file. This is akin to deleting the table of contents from a book; the information is still there, but the reader can't find it. Unfortunately, any geek worth his weight in dilithium can easily find and read these files. News Article Monday, October 8th 2007, 11:41am EDT Sweden's most popular blog discontinued. Sweden's most popular blogger, Alexander Schulman, last week closed down his blog, which attracted over 250 thousand readers a week, published on the homepage of Swedish daily Aftonbladet. Schulman explained the move saying his readers were chiefly interested in reading gossip about celebrities and that he was "filled with self-disgust". Now Sweden is debating the importance of blogs. Maria Schottenius writes that it's "a major mistake to consider blogs as a revolutionary development on a par with the advent of the Internet or radio. This delusion has triggered a kind of hysteria among otherwise serious journalists. It's sad to see respected journalists dedicating all their time to unimportant issues. Gossip attracts readers, but how many bloggers are there whose blogs are really read regularly? And what does the fact that the most popular words for blog searches are 'sex' and 'porn' tell us?" News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 10:00am EDT Sex.asia will be hot, says domain registrar. The Internet address www.sex.asia is likely to be the domain name most in demand next week when dot Asia Web sites are launched, Europe's .eu Internet domain registrar EURid said on Friday. "No one knows which names will be most popular...but EURid's experience offers some clues. In the first two days .eu domain names became available, EURid received 227 applications for sex.eu, 118 for hotel.eu and 94 for travel.eu," EURid said in a statement. "The .asia registry will probably see the same rush for generic names but that will pass," said Marc Van Wesemael, general manager of EURid. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:59am EDT Huge Nude Photo Shoot Planned In Miami. It's not unheard of to see topless women on South Beach. But Tunick will have about 600 men and women baring it all for his camera at the Sagamore. "It's about fantasy and leisure," he said. "It's a stereotype, but it's true. You're going to have a good time if you come to Miami Beach." That's the theme of Tunick's latest installation of art. The artist is known for his photographs of groups of nude people posed in artistic formations. "I'm going to have 100 to 200 women in pink rafts," he said. "We're going to have people on the balcony posing very much like the Tower of Babel meets Logan's Run. We're going to buy some champagne, 500 bottles, and were going to make a giant explosion for the climax of the installation from the balcony." The 600 volunteers, most from South Florida, will pose for the New York native. Site Development Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:58am EDT What They See Is What You Get. Eye Tracking, Statistical Analysis and Site Success What Is Eye Tracking? How a subject views a book page, a store display, an advertisement or other visual stimuli is measured using sophisticated tools that track eye scan, also called eye movement. These tools measure which design elements capture visitors' attention and which don't. Eye tracking is used in virtually every kind of marketing – TV ads, billboards, product packaging and web sites – to determine what works and what doesn't with consumers. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:57am EDT 20% of us having 80% of the sex. When you give the numbers a hard look, the truth is probably just what you've always suspected: About 20 per cent of the people in B.C. are having 80 per cent of the sex, young people do it more, and most of us tend to fudge the number of sex partners we've had. Those are some of the results of a poll commissioned by the Vancouver Sun into the bedroom habits of British Columbians. According to the poll, young and mostly unmarried people ages 18 to 34 have the most sex. They do it in public places, over the phone and with people they have met online in greater numbers than any other age group. About 40 per cent said they have sex six or more times a month and 73 per cent of those in a committed relationship -- but not married -- are having sex at least four times a month. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:56am EDT IBM drops attempt to patent outsourcing. IBM has abandoned a ludicrous attempt to patent outsourcing after an internet outcry. Big Blue submitted this highly original invention to the US Patent office in January 2006. Its principal claim was for "a method for identifying human-resource work content to outsource offshore of an organisation". The application was noticed at the weekend by Slashdotters, who lambasted the move by the world's most prolific patenter.IBM's open source and standards veep Bob Sutor posted this sheepish company statement on his blog last night:Here's why we are withdrawing it - IBM adopted a new policy a year ago to sharply reduce business method patent filings and instead stress significant technical content in its patents. Even though the patent application in question was filed eight months before the policy took effect in September, 2006, had the policy been in place at the time, IBM would not have filed the application. We're glad the community pointed this application out so IBM could take swift action. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:55am EDT Spammers turn YouTube into spam relay channel. Miscreants have turned a YouTube service into a spam relay channel. YouTube contains a facility that allows users to invite their friends to view videos that they are looking at or have posted. This "Invite Your Friends" system is being used to send out "massive quantities of spam", according to content security outfit Marshall. The messages, which all come from service@youtube.com, have the same appearance as a legitimate YouTube invite, except they contain pitches for tat such as penis pills and get-rich quick schemes instead of links to online video tat. Both could be considered forms of junk anyway which partly explains why cybercriminals have adopted the tactic. Site Development Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:54am EDT Five Things to Hate About Web Design. What do you hate most about websites? If you browse websites as much as we do, then there is a lot to hate. Because there are so many terribly designed, user non-friendly websites on the Internet today, we have put together this short but detailed list of things to hate about web design. In addition to compiling this list, we've also provided a solution for each of the problems. When creating a web design, there are a number of things that a web designer should take into consideration if their goal is to produce a high quality, user friendly website. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:46am EDT BBC slammed over TV adaptation of 'porn' novel. The BBC is using sex and prostitution as a device to keep its BBC Four TV channel alive. That’s the view of Ashford-based Mediawatch-UK founder John Beyer after the BBC announced it was making a TV adaption of the raunchy Fanny Hill: Or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. The book, which was banned in the UK for 200 years as pornography, is the story of a young country girl who falls into prostitution in bawdy 18th century London. She is forced to take a succession of lovers merely to survive and slowly rises to respectability - but only after enjoying wholeheartedly the fruits of her labour. It was written by John Cleland while he was in a debtors’ prison in 1748. Hailed as the original erotic novel, it has remained a firm literary favourite ever since. News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:45am EDT Reports: Pam & Rick Definitely Getting Hitched Saturday. After last weekend's false alarm of a wedding between Baywatch babe Pam Anderson and entrepreneur Rick Salomon, it's hard to believe anything you hear about this fair, both of whom are most famous for starring in their respective "leaked" porn tapes — his with celebutante supreme Paris Hilton; hers with then-hubby Tommy Lee. However, TV's Extra is reporting that they have confirmation that Anderson and Salomon not only met with a wedding coordinator in Las Vegas Thursday night, but that the couple is indeed going to say "I do". News Article Saturday, October 6th 2007, 9:45am EDT You heard him correctly: It's Porn Sunday. On Sunday, the congregation at The Crux church will talk about pornography.Hundreds of churches across the nation are expected to observe National Porn Sunday tomorrow to bring awareness to the problems pornography causes. The Crux's lead pastor, Daron Earlewine, said he is making sure that his church, on East 96th Street in Fishers, joins the discussion about "America's dirty little secret."According to www.pornsunday.com, there are 4.2 million pornographic sites online, and 40 million people who visit them daily. U.S. porn revenue of $6.2 billion exceeds the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC networks, the Web site says.On Sunday, Earlewine will lead services at 9 and 11 a.m., when he will discuss pornography, educational resources and ways to connect with support groups. News Bytes Friday, October 5th 2007, 12:02pm EDT The Rest of the News - Updated Continuously. Limbaugh's "Phony Soldiers" Slur. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 12:01pm EDT Taxing Trial Delay for Joe Francis. It looks as if Joe Francis is going to miss out on spring break '08. The Girls Gone Wild purveyor's trial on tax evasion charges has been postponed until Apr. 29, according to the Nevada U.S. Attorney's Office, meaning all of Francis' Florida-based legal affairs are going to remain on the back burner and he will likely remain in the slammer. His trial was originally scheduled to begin Tuesday. The 34-year-old entrepreneur has been denied bail in Nevada pending the resolution of his bond issues in Bay County, Florida, where he's facing six felony counts—down from 46 in the case's prime—of prostitution, conspiracy and using minors in a sexual performance stemming from a GGW video filmed at a Panama City Beach motel during spring break 2003. Francis is also facing two charges of transporting contraband into a jail cell after guards caught him with prescription meds when he was locked up for 35 days on a contempt rap in April. "It’s frustrating to be delayed once again by circumstances beyond our control," Panama City State Attorney spokesman Joe Grammer told the Panama City News Herald on Thursday, when the Nevada court granted the postponement. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 12:00pm EDT Death Penalty Sought In Death Of Pa. Porn Producer. Accused killers Harlow Cuadra and Joseph Kerekes had plenty to say Thursday afternoon shortly before pleading not guilty to killing Bryan Kocis. A subdued Cuadra maintained his innocence, saying "I didn't kill him," and that it was "not right" the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office is seeking the death penalty in the case. The 26-year-old also insinuated two men named Brian and Grant knew more than he did about the murder. A much more defiant Kerekes verbally attacked the Pennsylvania State Police as he was escorted into the courthouse by sheriff's deputies for seizing his and Cuadra's assets. The 33-year-old said he believes money was taken from him and Cuadra - his romantic partner and business partner - in order to limit the quality of defense they can mount against the charges. "I'm very angry they took $200,000 of our money," Kerekes said emphatically. "We need money for an adequate defense."Luzerne County Assistant District Attorney Tim Doherty declined to comment on Kerekes' allegations, citing Luzerne County Judge Peter Paul Olszewski Jr.'s order that limits attorneys from publicly discussing aspects of the case. As for the plea, Kocis' parents were in the front row of the courtroom, looking on when attorneys for both Cuadra and Kerekes said their clients were not guilty and wanted a trial. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:59am EDT The sex shop might still suffer from a bit of an image problem, but a new wave of female-orientated outlets are taking hold of central Scotland, with the emphasis on serious, grown-up glamour. In the beginning, there was Ann Summers, the ‘upmarket’ chain of sex-shops reinvented as female-friendly party planners by young executive Jacqueline Gold in 1987. Ann Summers parties feel almost innocent these days – peekaboo bras and French maid costumes are pulled on over sweatshirts; the party-goers sit cross-legged on the floor and giggle as they try out vibrators on their noses. There’s now a store on every high street in Scotland (except Perth, where concerned citizens had it shut down), selling jokey, genital-shaped chocolate, hen night smut and softcore erotica, and while there’s no doubt that the company helped make it more acceptable for British women to be open about shopping for sex toys and saucy lingerie, today’s increasingly sophisticated consumers are looking for something a bit different. London store Coco de Mar, run by Anita Roddick’s daughter Sam, was among the first to realise this, reenvisaging sex shopping as a high-end lifestyle experience, and one in which women were encouraged to take a lead – and it finally seems to be catching on north of the border too. Entering the newly-opened Agent Provocateur store on Glasgow’s Ingram Street, with its complex, splendid set pieces, concept lighting and legions of housecoat-clad glamour girls, is a bit like shopping in a Busby Berkeley musical. Busby probably wouldn’t have got the display cases of glittering whips past the censors, right enough. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:58am EDT Kid Rock Laughs Off Embarrassing Sex Tape. Kid Rock blames his nice-guy persona for making him the star of an embarrassing sex tape he still hasn't seen. The rap-rocker and former Creed star Scott Stapp were caught on camera getting pleasured by a groupie, and Rock still can't believe he was foolish enough to agree to the filmed sex session, which ended up online. He says, "That wasn't me, that was f&$#ing Scott Stapp or whoever was videotaping that. I remember saying, 'Dude, what's up with the camera?' I'm a nice guy. It's kind of like I had one Twinkie left, and I let him have half. How nice is that? It's like watching someone get their first kiss." Rock hasn't seen the footage, but he's pretty sure it must be funny: "I remember we're sitting there getting blown and I'm saying things like, 'Dude, aren't you in a religious band?'" News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:57am EDT Watchdogs to tour adult businesses. For more than two years, a group of retired Hoosiers has picketed day and night outside the Lion's Den, an adult bookstore and novelty shop near Uniontown. Yesterday, the protesters with the Jackson County Community Watchdogs announced plans to step up their pressure to shut down the operation, located west of Interstate 65 at Exit 41. They invited law-enforcement officials, prosecutors, ministers, mayors and members of the media to go on an Oct. 27 bus tour to Clarksville and Louisville to show what they contend are widespread and adverse effects of sexually oriented businesses. "We want to show people what can happen when you turn your head," said Ralph Sweany, a former mechanical engineer from Crothersville and the group's legal liaison. "You let these businesses get a foothold, pretty soon you've got a porn district." News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:55am EDT Chaste Home, Alabama, Where You Can't Buy a Dildo. The U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to have anything to do with the infamous Williams v. Alabama case, which has been wending its way through the court system for nine years. In that case, adult retailer Sherri Williams challenged the constitutionality of a state law banning the sale and distribution of any device intended for the purpose of stimulating the human genitals. This week a federal judge is expected to lift the injunction that has prevented the law from being enforced since 1998. The law was originally intended to shut down certain adult establishments, like strip clubs, so that children wouldn't have to walk past them on the way to malt shops and sock hops. The sex-toy thing got thrown in so minors wouldn't be exposed to adult retail shops either, and that's the part that got national attention. No one outside the local community cares if a strip club gets shut down; start telling women they can't buy vibrators, and the angry murmurs begin. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:53am EDT Cybernet Expo Moves to San Francisco. Cybernet Expo will be held at the Golden Gateway Hotel in San Francisco from June 10-13, the show director said Thursday. "I couldn't be happier about the decision to move Cybernet Expo to San Francisco," said Jay Kopita, director of the event. "San Francisco is one of the more interesting and unique cities in the country. The weather there is great for a summertime show like Cybernet, and with the relaxed atmosphere of the West Coast, we're expecting some pretty wild parties in the evenings." In addition to its new venue, Cybernet 2008 will have increased involvement from the YNOT Network. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:52am EDT Web Heavies Form Blockade Against Phishers. Yahoo eBay and PayPal are teaming up to improve protections against phishing attacks, the companies announced Thursday. The companies have adopted a new e-mail authentication technology, developed by Yahoo and known as "DomainKeys Identified Mail" (DKIM), that uses cryptography to verify the domain of the sender. By allowing e-mail providers to validate an e-mail's originating domain -- ensuring that an e-mail apparently from PayPal really is from PayPal, for instance -- the technology makes blacklists and whitelists more effective. It also makes phishing attacks easier to detect by helping to identify abusive domains, the companies said. "eBay and PayPal's adoption of e-mail authentication technology and this aggressive move on the part of Yahoo Mail are significant steps forward in the fight to protect consumers against e-mail-based crimes," said Michael Barrett, chief information security officer at PayPal. "While there is clearly no silver bullet for solving the problems of phishing and identity theft, today's announcement is great news for our customers who rely on Yahoo Mail." News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:51am EDT The poor man's all-in-one PC costs $380 including a 20" wide-screen LCD. Image shows an older 19" LCD with a crude mock-up attached to the back. The entire computer including the LCD takes 58W in idle and 64W at peak CPU operation. The PC itself consumes 30W idle and 36W CPU peak. The CPU is a 1.33 GHz Celeron 215 processor based on the "Yonah" Core Microarchitecture with the equivalent performance if a Pentium 4 2.2 GHz. News Article Friday, October 5th 2007, 11:50am EDT RIAA wins key victory, accused file sharer must pay $220,000. A Minnesota woman must pay $220,000 to six of the top music labels after a federal jury found on Thursday that she violated their copyright. Search Engines Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:45am EDT Brand New Websites: A SEO Company Perspective. Even a top of the line search engine optimization company faces challenges when trying to get new websites listed on major search engines. This article addresses some of the biggest hurdles and the most effective strategies for overcoming them in the long-term. News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:44am EDT Yahoo Mail to block fake eBay and PayPal e-mail. If you use Yahoo Mail you should be seeing a significant reduction in the number of e-mail scams purporting to be from eBay and PayPal very soon. Yahoo will be upgrading its system beginning on Thursday with technology--dubbed "DomainKeys"--designed to block phishing spam and other fraudulent e-mails that look like they come from eBay and PayPal but don't. The system works by verifying the domain of the sender of the e-mail, allowing ISPs to block messages they deem illegitimate. The upgrade is expected to be accomplished globally over the next several weeks. Typically, the phishing scams masquerade as e-mails from trusted financial sources and direct a recipient to a Web site where they're asked to enter their user name and password. From there, their information is stolen. Although most companies warn their customers that they won't send unsolicited e-mails asking for usernames and passwords, many people are still fooled. Blocking the scam e-mails before they hit in-boxes should cut down on the problem. Now, when is Yahoo going to do this for the major banks? News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:43am EDT Feds Shut Down California's Domain Name. The Federal government pulled the plug on the ca.gov Web domain used by the State of California on Tuesday, setting into motion a chain of events that threatened to grind government business to a standstill within the state. State IT staffers were able to fix the problem within a few hours, narrowly averting disaster, but the situation shed light on what observers are calling a shocking weakness in the state's IT infrastructure. The story behind the shutdown, and how the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) came within hours of shutting down the State of California's Internet presence is a complex one, but as with so many stories on the Internet, it begins with pornography. Search Engines Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:42am EDT Recently I took on a new SEO client who had a major problem. They had a very popular portal site in a competitive industry but for 3 months running, their Top 10 search engine rankings for major keywords had taken a consistent dive. The position drops ranged from 1 or 2 places up to 20 places. They hired me to try and address the issue quickly because their advertising revenue relied on the top 10 visibility of their brand in the SERPs. I looked for the usual suspects, a Google penalty, dodgy code, hidden text, new competitors, 404 errors, keyword stuffing, fast acquisition of links, domain issues, major hosting outages, over-optimization and code bloat. Nothing - the site checked out clean. There had been a major Google algorithm update in the past 6 months, but that had occurred weeks earlier to the downward trend. So then I asked about the design history and if any major changes had been made a week or so prior to the sudden ranking drop. The client couldn't recall any major changes so I went about the business of improving the site as best I could and integrating a link building campaign to obtain links from high quality sites in the same industry. News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:41am EDT Kim Kardashian Nude Pic Scandal. This girl can’t seem to keep her clothes on! There is a criminal investigation being held regarding some nude pictures of Kim and Kourtney Kardashian that were allegedly taken while the sisters were underage. The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” stars reportedly posed for some racy photos eleven years ago, and now some classy photographer is trying to sell the pics to media outlets. Eric Ford, of San Fernando Valley, apparently has pictures of Kim and Kourtney posing sexually, and some of the images include a naked man as well. It is unclear if Ford is aware that the girls are underage in the photos. But the Kardashian clan aren’t going to sit by and let it happen. Their rep told press, “Any publication that would print these pictures, which are considered child pornography, will be subject to the same criminal investigation as the agency who is attempting to sell them.” News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:41am EDT Porn store could open this weekend. The sign for “After Hours Video” is up on Springhill Road, and business owner Rick Krial said the adult store might open as soon as this weekend. Krial’s decision to open an adult business in Staunton has been met with an outcry from residents who are concerned about the impact the business will have on the city. Members of the recently formed activist group, the Citizens’ Task Force Against Pornography in Staunton, have been collecting petitions that ask the city to pass strict regulations for adult businesses. “This individual certainly has the right to open his pornography shop under the Constitution,” said resident Andrea Oakes, who is heading up the task force. However, the fact that he would open his store despite the public outcry from residents demonstrates that he is not concerned about the city’s well-being, she said. At the store, the windows have been blacked out, so that passersby cannot look inside. “No Loitering” signs have also been posted. News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:40am EDT Blu-Ray Porn, Mechanized Masturbation and Upskirts at Japan's First Sex Show. As anyone who has taken a stroll through Tokyo's raucous red-light districts will know, Japanese people aren't exactly shy about sex. But like most things in Japan there's a proper time and place, and it's not the businesslike environs of an international exhibition venue. Or rather that was true. Japan recently had its first-ever adult expo at the Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo. In a press release the organizers of the "Adult Treasure Expo" vowed to "draw the adult industry out of the darkness and secrecy which has traditionally surrounded it, to the place of honor and value which it deserves." Over three days, about 150,000 adult industry workers and members of the public attended the event. For a Japanese trade expo, the event was surprisingly uncrowded, especially compared to other big events held at the venue. Organizers didn't get their target 200,000 visitors. The expo was about 60:40 industry and members of the public; and less than 1 percent overseas visitors. But what the sexpo lacked in size, it certainly made up with enthusiasm. The Expo featured ultrarealistic sex dolls, masturbating machines, a bukkake booth, hardcore Blu-Ray porn and a member of the miniskirt police. Business Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:39am EDT The Importance of Information Technology Training. Information technology training is typically thought of as only being necessary for IT personnel in the trenches. This article discusses the importance of IT management training for adapting to new business technologies and identifying new technologies to add to your business strategies. Information technology training for IT managers and systems analysts may seem superfluous - these folks are usually well-learned in their areas of expertise. But, do they understand how a company's technology fits into the bigger picture from a business perspective? That's where management training becomes important. Every manager who plays a role in researching, selecting or implementing enterprise technology needs to have a firm grasp on the basics of emerging technologies, as well as how they serve a larger business purpose, to ensure that technology is being used to the company's best strategic advantage. News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:38am EDT Texas patent holder sues Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft. A Texas company has sued AOL, Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, claiming that all four web giants have infringed its patent "for conducting business transactions over the Internet". Performance Pricing Inc. filed suit last week in the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division, a popular place for patent infringement suits. The company insists that four of the biggest names on the net are stepping on its patent with their ad technologies, including Google AdWords, Microsoft adCenter, Yahoo! Search Marketing, and the Google-powered AOL Search Marketplace. "Defendants have used, and continue to use, Plaintiff Performance Pricing's patented technology methods and systems that they make, use, sell, and offer to sell, without Plaintiff's permission," the suit reads. "Plaintiff seeks damages for patent infringement and an injunction preventing Defendants from making, using, selling, or offering to sell technology claimed by the patent without Plaintiff's permission." Think that's dodgy English? Wait 'til you read the patent. Dubbed "Systems and methods for transacting business over a global communications network such as the Internet," the patent describes a method "for conducting business transactions over the Internet, allowing buyers to reduce the price of the selected product/service based on the buyer's performance during a collateral activity." Yes, this is a business process patent. News Article Thursday, October 4th 2007, 11:38am EDT Streaming videos are more popular than ever. Autumn is here, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness and the time when an old man's man’s fancy turns to thoughts of lots of video-watching in front of a roaring log fire. That is me I suppose, but it's also the view of the world according to the latest edition of the twice-yearly run-down of advertising trends as researched and compiled by advertising.com. The statistics show viewing trends such as who is watching what, when, how old are they, how many are doing it and where? This year's figures don't hold any big surprises; viewership has risen slightly year-on-year from 2006, with nearly 85 per cent of online video consumers claiming that they have watched about the same amount of video via the Web so far this year as they did in 2006. A "dial-a-porn" service and the New York Daily News are among companies Michael Mukasey, President Bush's choice for attorney general, has listed as former legal clients in documents turned over to senators who will decide whether to confirm him. The 50-page document, a routine form filled out by presidential nominees, was released Tuesday by the committee. No date has been set for Mukasey's confirmation hearings. Mukasey, who served as a federal judge from 1988 to 2006, listed the pornography and Daily News cases as two of the 10 "most significant litigated matters" in which he had been involved while in private practice. In the document, Mukasey said he was part of the defense team for a dial-up porn service against charges of interstate transportation of obscene materials. The case was litigated in 1987, before he was appointed to the federal bench. "I directed the strategy and legal research, drafted major portions of the papers and gave the principal argument in support of the motion to dismiss the indictment," Mukasey wrote.Mukasey said government prosecutors "had charged violation of three statutes that did not apply to the defendants' conduct." The case was appealed, but its final outcome was not described in the Mukasey's questionnaire. A man who unsuccessfully filed suit in August against SexSearch and other adult-industry companies, accusing them of offenses such as failing to verify the ages of their members, has decided to take his case to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. U.S. District Court Judge Jack Zouhary dismissed the unnamed plaintiff's claims a month after the charges were filed. "It's puzzling why the plaintiff is appealing such a well-thought-out ruling by the district-court judge," SexSearch lead counsel Gary Kaufman told AVN Online. "We can only assume that in bringing the appeal, the plaintiff is operating under the old adage that it doesn't hurt to try." Online videos aren't just for bloopers and rants - some might also be conduits for malicious code that can infect your computer. The summit is gathering more than 300 scholars and security experts to discuss emerging threats for 2008 - and their countermeasures. Among their biggest foes are the ever-changing vehicles that hackers use to deliver "malware," which can silently install viruses, probe for confidential info or even hijack a computer. News Article Wednesday, October 3rd 2007, 11:24am EDT Snooping service techs may make home computers unsafe havens for personal files. You may think your home computer or laptop is a safe place to conduct personal business. But keeping the contents of that equipment confidential isn't guaranteed once you hand it over to service technicians for repairs, or even if workers enter your house to install cable or phone lines. "Customers have no protection at all," said Ian Friedman, an attorney whose Cleveland law firm specializes in defending individuals accused of computer sex crimes. "You're not afforded the right to privacy." Mr. Friedman, who also teaches at the Cleveland Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University, said that among the reasons consumers are so frequently caught unaware by technicians uncovering private data, including pornography, is that it's not against the law for technicians to peruse everything stored on computers they may be servicing. "If they are not government agents, it's not illegal." Government agents or law enforcement officials need a warrant to enter your home or personal files. Privacy issues surrounding technology came to light in Pittsburgh recently with the case of a Mt. Lebanon real estate developer who pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography. He was charged after Internet service technicians came to his home last year to install fiber-optic cable and found six compact discs on a basement air duct. One technician placed a disc in the home computer and saw pornographic images of children. Local Internet providers Verizon and Comcast said they train workers to report to authorities the instances of child pornography they come across while servicing customers' equipment. But the companies declined to comment on how far their technicians go in looking for such material. News Article Wednesday, October 3rd 2007, 11:23am EDT Edinburgh Is Sex Capital For Single Men. Edinburgh is the top city in Britain when it comes to sex for single men, says a survey. Auld Reekie tops the table of 15 hot spots in the "sex on the brain" category, followed by Glasgow, Manchester and Birmingham. This is worked out by combining how much men fantasise about women, look at porn, flirt online and want more sex .Men's Health magazine analysed a combination of government data, NHS statistics, surveys, studies and other figures to work out the sex league table. Edinburgh also tops the table for sex in the bedroom, with Sheffield, Nottingham and Glasgow not far behind. This is worked out by adding up figures for how many times a week men have sex, how often they have strayed, the number of partners and how many have had a sexual disease. A magazine spokesman said: "Least interested in sex as well as the booziest, Belfast boys prove that alcohol dampens one's sex drive." News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:13pm EDT Court won't hear challenge to state sex toy law. The sale of sex toys in Alabama is about to become illegal, but the owner of Pleasures in Decatur and Huntsville said her inventory will not change. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge to the state's 1998 ban on sex-toy sales. A federal court injunction has prevented enforcement of the law during the challenge by Pleasures' owner Sherri Williams, but the state attorney general's office said it expected the court to lift that injunction in a couple of days. "At that point, district attorneys around the state should feel comfortable enforcing it," said Chris Bence, spokesman for Attorney General Troy King. Williams, speaking from Las Vegas where she was attending a trade show, said the sex toys she sells — including those that vibrate — have multiple purposes. The 1998 law bans distribution of "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for anything of pecuniary value." It does not ban condoms, virility drugs or sexual devices with a "bona fide medical" purpose. The law does not prevent Alabama residents from buying sex toys in another state or online for use in Alabama. Decatur Police Department spokesman Lt. Dennis Hughes said his department is obligated to enforce state laws and will do so. "We'll be monitoring the situation, and we'll go from there with it," he said. "If we've got complaints or we need to do enforcement, then we'll take it as it comes." He said complaints are not a necessary prerequisite to an enforcement action. "We're charged with enforcing all local, state and federal laws," Hughes said. "If they're in violation of it, then we would enforce the laws." The ASWSU Student Entertainment Board last week postponed the Homecoming XXX Porno Debate due to recent sexual assaults in Pullman. The debate, which was scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, was to feature adult film star Ron Jeremy and California pastor Craig Gross. The two were planned to discuss positions on the pornography industry. Homecoming Programmer Kelly Pflugrath said that in light of the recent events, there was concern if it was the right time to have a sexual-education discussion. “Though the XXX Porn Debate would be an educational experience and healthy conversation, we recognize that it is poor timing considering the recent events that have occurred on campus,” a SEB announcement stated. Two men allegedly sexually assaulted a woman Sept. 13 at the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Two suspects were arrested and are out on bail. One of the suspects is 25-year-old Christopher Jack Reid, who is also known as “Jack Venice” – an adult film actor who has appeared in more than 80 pornographic films. Pflugrath said the WSU administration heard complaints about the debate, leading SEB to postpone it. WSU President Elson S. Floyd said he expressed his concerns to ASWSU and SEB, but did not tell them to cancel it. News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:08pm EDT Senators Tussle Over Net Tax Ban as Deadline Looms. A move to extend the current ban on Internet access taxes -- which is due to expire next month -- was stalled in the Senate last week. News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:07pm EDT Yahoo making big improvements in search. Yahoo is making important improvements to the user interface and the output of its search engine. It will now suggest complete search queries for you as you type. It makes entering queries a lot faster and improves the likelihood that you'll spell your query correctly. Google offers a similar feature in its downloadable add-on, Google Toolbar, but not yet on its Web site. The suggestions box also shows related search terms. It's pretty smart. When I tried searching for "Corvette," for example, the Search Assist box also displayed "sports cars," "z06," and other related terms. Other interface improvements include the embedding of video clips in search results pages (some pop up over the page when you play them), as well as photos from Flickr. Marketing Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:06pm EDT Like it or not, the Web is turning into an environment that will be dominated by audio and video presentations. And as we have already seen, the democratic nature of the Web has allowed the best and worst to stand side-by-side. On one side, you have the whacky viral videos that serve little commercial purpose other than to enhance the reputations of their creators; and on the other side, you have deadly boring corporate videos that lack any of the qualities that make Web-video the best sales tool a business will ever have. In the middle are a few innovative companies that know how to deliver a marketing message by telling a business story with style and panache so that an audience will remember the message and act upon it. And yes, even a few know how, and are willing, to do it with a reasonable budget. News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:05pm EDT Brute force attack yields keys to Google's kingdom. Miscreants pushing Viagra and malware are making new progress infiltrating Google indexes, a feat that's considered the Holy Grail among spammers. Google, which by some estimates carries out 60 per cent of the world's searches, goes to great lengths to filter naughty sites from its results. The proliferation of rogue sites that have made an end run around the controls is giving rise to conspiracy theories that Google has been hacked. "If a smart spammer has really found a way to game the Google search results with spoofed or cloaked sites, and Google still doesn't have a fix, this could be a major issue with the underlying infrastructure of the entire Google operation," according to this post on The Google Watchdog blog. "This is the first time that I've ever been worried that Google's own index has been hacked." News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 12:04pm EDT Don't call it a bust just yet, but it's fair to say eBay executives aren't thrilled with what they're getting out of Skype, which the auction king bought for $2.6 billion two years ago. On Monday, eBay said it would take a $900 million so-called impairment write-down against the value of Skype. This means that eBay has been forced to reassess the value of the Internet telephony company relative to its overall business today. By recording a charge, the company is essentially saying that it has taken a loss on its original investment. In what looks like an attempt to shake things up at Skype and move the division in a new direction, eBay also said Monday that Skype co-founder and Chief Executive Niklas Zennstrom has stepped down. News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 11:59am EDT Prosecutors will seek death penalty in Kocis case. As one death penalty case wrapped up, Luzerne County prosecutors on Monday started another one. A team of assistant district attorneys filed notice they will seek the death penalty for homicide suspects Harlow Raymond Cuadra and Joseph Manuel Kerekes in the January slaying of gay porn producer Bryan Kocis. Prosecutors said they have two legal reasons to put the two Virginia Beach, Va., men to death in the slaying. One, they said, is the men killed Kocis while perpetrating another felony. In this case, the other felonies are robbery, arson, theft and criminal conspiracy, the prosecutors said. Two, they said, is that the men created a grave risk to other people while committing the killing. Investigators claim Cuadra, 26, and Kerekes, 33, killed Kocis, whom they considered their rival in the gay porn industry, inside his Dallas Township home and then set the home on fire. Kocis, 44, was found dead by the firefighters who responded to a report of a house fire at the Midland Drive home on Jan. 24. Kocis died from a slash to the throat that also severed his carotid artery and windpipe. News Article Tuesday, October 2nd 2007, 11:58am EDT Anonymity disappears under rise of tracking programs. News Article Monday, October 1st 2007, 11:50am EDT Canadian Court Opens Up eBay Data to Tax Agency. Before they bid, many eBay users check out sellers by reviewing the ratings given by previous shoppers. A Canadian court, however, has ruled that Canada’s tax collectors can look at a more significant piece of information: how much money individual, high-volume sellers make through eBay. The partial decision by the Federal Court has concerned some privacy advocates in Canada. It also provides a twist on a longstanding privacy concern in Canada. Many Canadians worry that when their personal data is stored on computers in the United States, government officials in that country might examine it. The eBay ruling, however, found that Canada’s government has the right, at least concerning tax issues, to gain access to computer files stored on servers in other countries. News Article Monday, October 1st 2007, 11:49am EDT Microsoft Investigates Blocked Patch Updates in XP. Microsoft officials say they are investigating reports that files the company deployed this summer prevent Windows XP users who run a built-in "repair" function from installing as many as 80 of the company's latest security patches. "We are aware of reports about customers not being able to download some updates from Windows Update when using the latest version of the Windows Update client and after reinstalling Windows XP system files from CD," a Microsoft spokesperson said Sept. 27. "We take this issue very seriously and are investigating the root cause of this behavior and what options are available to address it." The issue was brought to light by Scott Dunn, a writer and associate editor with Windows Secrets Newsletter. According to Dunn, the problem is stealthy updates deployed by Microsoft in July and August. The files prevent Windows XP users who utilize the repair function from installing recent patches. In the newsletter, Dunn explained that after a user employs the repair option from an XP CD-ROM, Windows Update downloads and installs the new 7.0.600.381 executable files. Some of the Windows Update executables are not registered with the operating system, which in turn prevents Windows Update from working as intended. |
