Video Raised the Internet Bar.

The other day a few friends and I stopped back at the office after a long day of golf. By age, the foursome spanned three unique musical eras. Pete the chef is a child of the '70's. Business partner Andy and I are products of the '80's and our fourth, young Derek the hotel manager had his halcyon days in the '90's. Finding music that suits all our tastes is a challenging with one liking the guitar-god rock of Led Zeppelin, two digging the melodic meanderings of the post-punk '80's and the other intently listening to the contemporary sounds of today. Though the several thousand MP3s from our collective systems have been merged into one meta-MP3 music file providing what should be at least a week of continuous, entertainment. The problem is, my main computer appears to be dropping its drivers and those thousands of MP3s are sounding sort of fuzzy.

Adware may be lurking in video on MySpace.

Several MySpace pages offer what appear to be YouTube videos that trigger installation of adware when played, a security company has warned. The sexually explicit videos can be found on a number of user pages on the MySpace social networking website, Websense said in an alert Monday. They look like You Tube video, but are in fact hosted on a copycat "Yootube.info" website, Websense said. That website was still online as of Tuesday evening. "When users click on the video, they are directed to a copy of the video," Websense said. People are then redirected to the Windows Media Player, which will pop up a license agreement with installation of an adware program called Zango Cash, it said.

Porn Manager.

Go on, admit it. You've wondered what it would be like to just throw caution to the wind, go down to your local electrical shop, buy a camcorder and become a porn star. Of course, something usually stops most of us from living out this particular dream, whether it be common sense, a lack of money or the fact that you're too damn scared of uploading it on to the net in case your parents see it. Could a mobile porn game be an outlet for your, erm, frustrations? You start Porn Manager with just a fistfull of bucks, a couple of rooms and plenty of ambition, and set off on the long and not so lonely road to becoming the next Hugh Hefner.

Playboy posts profit on Club Jenna Web, DVD sales.

Playboy Enterprises Inc., publisher of the most widely read men's magazine, posted an unexpected profit, buoyed by online sales from porn star Jenna Jameson's Club Jenna. The shares rose the most in two years. Net income dropped 66 percent to $1.1 million, or 3 cents a share, from $3.2 million, or 10 cents, a year earlier, Chicago- based Playboy said in a statement today. Playboy beat the average estimate of a loss of 3.4 cents a share from seven analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial. Sales rose to $82.3 million. Online sales rose 40 percent, helped by the June purchase of Club Jenna and sales of Playboy DVDs, the company said. Licensing revenue rose 41 percent to $4.6 million. The results show Chief Executive Officer Christie Hefner, daughter of founder Hugh Hefner, may be succeeding in her efforts to revive sales after three years of revenue growth below 10 percent.

Adult site doesn’t break law.

If an Oregon couple decide to continue their adult business after moving into a north Scottsdale home, there’s not much city officials could do about it. Kevin and Sandra Otterson, proprietors of an adult Web site called Wifey’s World, bought a lot in the upscale Ancala neighborhood in March. The couple, both in their 40s, go by the screen names of “Hubby” and “Wifey.” City Attorney Deborah Robberson said that if the city’s laws regarding home occupations and zoning aren’t being violated, and there’s no discernible criminal activity, officials would be hardpressed to take any action. City law does not address the production of adult material in private homes, she said.

Change Your Sex with Doctor's Note.

It used to be that you had to have a sex change to change your sex. In New York City, at least, that may be about to, um, change. Here's a report from the NYT: Under the rule being considered by the city’s Board of Health, which is likely to be adopted soon, people born in the city would be able to change the documented sex on their birth certificates by providing affidavits from a doctor and a mental health professional laying out why their patients should be considered members of the opposite sex, and asserting that their proposed change would be permanent.

Attackers end-run around IE security.

The dependence of Internet Explorer on other Windows components has allowed online attackers to work around the shored-up security of Microsoft's latest browser. Last weekend, security researchers discovered a website using an previously unknown, or zero-day, vulnerability in a relatively unused ActiveX component of Windows to infect visitors' systems. ActiveX components act as a common way to exchange data between various components of Windows. While the flawed ActiveX component - a part of Microsoft's XML Core Services 4.0 - is not shipped with Internet Explorer, attackers can use the browser to trigger the flaw and compromise any system on which the ActiveX control is installed. The vulnerability underscores that the improvements in security in the latest version of Microsoft's browser, Internet Explorer 7, do not eliminate the threats of older components of Windows, said Gunter Ollmann, director of IBM Internet Security Systems' X-Force vulnerability research team.

Doubt cast on anti-porn group.

The mysterious group that launched Scottsdale's latest porn controversy has no known members and likely does not exist, those following the story said. The Northeast Valley Coalition Against Pornography raised eyebrows in north Scottsdale last week by distributing a flier warning of an Oregon couple's plans to move their hardcore Web site to a Scottsdale neighborhood. The flier listed no contact information, and several community leaders said they had never heard of the group. Kevin Otterson, who runs the Wifey's World site with his wife, Sandra, declined to speculate who may have targeted him. But he said he thought it was not someone who lived in Scottsdale. "I don't believe this coalition exists," said Otterson, who bought property this year on 119th Street in the upscale Ancala subdivision.

Australian Firm Forced To Rehire Employee It Fired For Viewing Porn On Work Computers.

Last year, NCR Australia fired a long-term (31 years) employee after it discovered 175 pornographic pictures stored on his work computer. That kind of story isn't all that uncommon these days -- but what is strange is that the Industrial Relations Commission has apparently told the company it needs to hire the guy back, saying that his dismissal was unfair, as well as "harsh, unreasonable and unjust." The man in question claimed that such content was routinely passed around at work, including from his supervisor. The review found that, even though having porn on the computer may have violated the signed policies of the company, since the signing of that form was done in a "mechanical, unthinking routine," it probably was meaningless. I would imagine this does not mean that Australians are free to surf porn at work whenever they feel like it, but they might at least make a reasonable defense as to why they shouldn't be fired for it.

Really Cheesy Porn Music Named Top Killer Of Online Masturbation Fantasies.

A recent survey conducted among regular online porn browsers named "really cheesy background music" as the number one sexual fantasy killer, according to Adultweb pundit, Planet Suzy. "Bad background music, namely blaring factory and machine technocrap and Mexican Mariachi, can kill a good bean-flicking or helmet-scrubbing session as sure as your mom sneaking up behind you. It's amazing to me that porn producers would go through all the trouble of hiring beautiful models, filming, and then overlay the vids with such unnerving, detracting music."

The 'F-word' gets its own movie.

An independent filmmaker has produced a movie titled, and all about the history of the English language's most vulgar "F-word," the New York Post reported. "I've always been intrigued with this one specific word that can be used in so many ways -- as a noun, a verb or an exclamation," filmmaker Steve Anderson told the newspaper. The film traces the linguistic history of the word and offers thoughts on the word from such diverse people as Miss Manners to porn star Ron Jeremy. The movie also attained the dubious honor of containing the biggest number of uses of the F-word at more than 800, bumping out the previous record holder, Gary Oldman's "Nil by Mouth," which included it 428 times.

Is your software free, open or litigated?

By agreeing to license Microsoft's intellectual property, SuSE distributor Novell has created a potentially fatal division in what's called F/OSS, the Free/Open Source Software movement. What has Novell done, and why is it so potentially damaging? Free Software advocates have always insisted that "free" and "open" were two movements loosely aligned, and that the Johnny Come Lately "open source" term was just a media-friendly marketing moniker. The "open source" lobby replied with some annoyance that this was an unimportant semantic issue. Now, however, that distinction is painfully apparent, and Microsoft is exploiting it to the full.

'Voter Guides' Show Bias Against Adult.

As this is written, it's three days before the election, and the numbers in the polls on single issues still aren't adding up to 100, which means that there are still apparently some "undecideds" out there. So we have to ask: How ignorant or abysmally stupid do you have to be to be "undecided" at this late date? Aren't the issues clear? If you're in the adult industry, can there be any question in your mind that Republicans want to put you out of a job (and possibly out of your life? That the Libertarians, who can't possibly win a national election, are the only ones likely to keep their grubby, greedy hands off the industry – and who therefore are a choice only for local positions? And that the Democrats are the best chance we have, among those who could win, to possibly-just-maybe find more important things to do with their time than worry about what people can watch in their bedrooms?

'Girls Gone Wild' attorneys want charges in Bay County dropped.

Attorneys for the producer of the ``Girls Gone Wild'' videos asked a judge Friday to drop charges against Joseph Francis, claiming police misconduct has tainted the case. The Bay County Sheriff's Office targeted ``Girls Gone Wild'' in retaliation for a federal lawsuit Francis filed against local officials before his April 2003 arrest, defense attorney Larry Simpson wrote in the motion filed in state circuit court.``The BCSO's plan was a simple one follow GGW everywhere they went, monitor their activities, locate where they were staying and generally harass GGW until law enforcement could come up with some arguable violation of law that would justify the arrest of Joe Francis and the seizure of everything in the possession of GGW,'' Simpson wrote. ``Thus, the ultimate goal was to put GGW out of business.'' Also, no evidence supports the charges after Circuit Judge Dedee Costello in July suppressed hundreds of hours of videotape seized in 2003 from Francis' condominiums and private jet, Simpson wrote. Francis, 33, was charged with more than 40 criminal offenses. His arrest came after two 17-year-old girls said a ``Girls Gone Wild'' photographer videotaped them in sexual situations in a Panama City Beach motel room on March 31, 2003.

Zango fined $3m for noxious adware downloads.

Zango, better known as 180solutions, has agreed to pay $3m to settle a lawsuit over its alleged distribution of adware. In settling the suit, Zango also agreed to be bound by an injunction preventing it from using unfair or deceptive marketing tactics to promote its wares or to make it difficult for consumers to removing its software from their PCs. The lawsuit against the firm and two of its directors, Keith Smith and Daniel Todd, was brought by the Federal Trade Commission, the US consumer rights organisation. According to the FTC's complaint, Zango regularly used third party affiliates to install adware on consumers’ computers. The adware, including programs named Zango Search Assistant, 180Search Assistant, Seekmo, and n-CASE, monitored consumers’ surfing habits in order to display intrusive pop-up ads. The FTC reckons up to 70 million PCs have been infected with the adware resulting in the delivery of an estimated 6.9 bn pop-up ads. Applications developed by the firm have been blacklisted by anti-spyware vendors.

0-day bug shatters Windows.

Security researchers have identified an unpatched vulnerability in Windows. The flaw - which affecst all supported versions of Windows bar Windows 2003 - resides in a security bug in Microsoft XML Core Services, specifically an unspecified security bug in the XMLHTTP 4.0 ActiveX Control. The flaw creates a means for hackers to inject malware onto the PCs of surfers running IE who visit a website hosting malicious code that attempts to harness the security bug. Security notification firm Secunia says that the vulnerability is being actively exploited by hackers. Microsoft has posted an advisory conceding the problem and suggesting possible workarounds, which basically involve disabling the affected ActiveX control, ahead of the arrival of a patch.

Looking at porn through a gender gap.

Last month researchers at McGill University in Canada reconfirmed what we'll call the porn paradox: When hooked up to instruments measuring sexual arousal, men and women reacted with equal speed when watching pornographic films. This raises several questions, including why women are so much less likely than men to consider viewing porn a valuable use of our time. But the type of material used in the study also raises broader questions about the effects of porn on both sexes.Irv Binik, who led the research, said he used special sex films borrowed from the Kinsey Institute in Illinois. One was predetermined to be arousing to men, another to women, though Binik says they both looked the same to him. Both showed heterosexual couplings. Why do any of us find it arousing to watch films of other people having sex? These people are obviously busy. They're not inviting you in to join them.

Malicious code planted in Wikipedia.

Malware writers have used a Wikipedia article and special storage features to attempt to plant malicious code on unsuspecting users' systems, the online encyclopedia's organizers have confirmed. The incident took advantage of Wikipedia's policy of openness, which allows anyone to create and modify articles. The attackers created a Wikipedia page that promised a Windows security update for a supposedly new version of the Lovesan/W32.Blaster worm and pointed to an external site with the seemingly authentic domain wikipedia-download.org. Wikipedia editors quickly identified and deleted the article, according to a report from German news organization Heise. However, the attackers had used a Wikipedia feature that archives all previous versions of articles when changes have been made.

Religious leader flip flops on gay sex and drugs scandal.

So now we know: Ted Haggard, evangelical overlord and leader of upwards of 30 million happy homophobes and nervous Bush supporters, a man who says he calls Dubya once a week to, presumably, talk about God and gays and sin and cattle and sex and milkshakes and who knows what the hell else, we now know Pastor Ted most definitely did not probably well OK maybe I mean obviously we all know he did but he's denying it anyway even though it couldn't be more obvious, Ted did not have lots and lots of gay sex with a big handsome burly gay prostitute for three years, and oh yes also got massages and snorted lots of meth and by the way he had quite a deliciously good time of it, too. This is what absolutely did not happen, OK? Even though you know it did. Shhh. Ah, Pastor Ted. He is a piece of work. He is a bit loud and crass and a little disorienting and very odd looking and just blindingly car-salesmany in his beautifully bloated Christian shtick. And oh yes, he is totally not secretly, wildly gay.

Online Obscenity..India More Permissive than USA?

USA is a modern society compared to India. It is therefore natural to expect that Indian laws of online obscenity should be stricter than USA. But some of the recent developments appear to suggest that while USA is moving towards greater restrictions of the web media, India is moving towards more permissive ness. Have the two countries crossed each other already?.. It appears to be so.. at least with regard to the fixing of responsibilities of intermediaries in respect of controlling depravation of our coming generation. US is getting ready to pass a law titled “Deleting Online Predators Act” (DOPA) the effect of which is to bar certain websites from being accessed from Schools and Public Libraries receiving Government funding. The objective of this is mainly to protect Children. On the other hand, India so far has considered obscenity on the Internet punishable whether the victim is an adult or a child. However things are set to change in India. Under the proposed amendments to Information Technology Act 2000, that is being put up in the Parliament shortly for consideration, a distinction is being made between child pornography and adult pornography and reducing the punishments in case of “Obscenity” (with higher financial penalty in case of Child Pornography).

The 8-year-old site features pictures and videos of the couple being intimate. Kevin Otterson said he and his wife had not yet decided whether to return to Scottsdale from Oregon, where they moved about two years ago. But a handful of residents worry about what the move could mean for their neighborhood.

According to the FTC, Zango/180Solutions software has been downloaded on American computers more than 70 million times and has pumped out more than 6.9 billion pop-up ads. Much of Zango's 'success' was down to rogue affiliates, who tempted consumers with offers of free software and then downloaded Zango software without their knowledge onto their computers.

Don't Sabotage Your Search Engine Optimization Company.

The average search engine optimization company is in high demand, and with rising pay-per-click costs and growing exposure of SEO in the mainstream media, this is unlikely to soon subside. Unfortunately, many organizations that willingly embrace SEO as a marketing tool also unknowingly sabotage the efforts of the search engine optimization company they have chosen. What follows is a list, by no means complete, of some of the most common errors made by companies that can harm their SEO efforts.

Consumer Groups Demand FTC Investigation.

If you’ve ever worried that you’re being watched while you’re online, rest assured: You are. At least that’s what two consumer advocacy groups that on Wednesday filed a complaint against online advertisers are claiming. In their 50-page complaint, the Center for Digital Democracy (CDD) and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (US PIRG)—both public-interest advocacy groups working toward a more diverse and competitive online environment—claim the data-collection and interactive-marketing system currently shaping the U.S. electronic marketplace has invaded surfer privacy by relentlessly tracking Internet users.

Sex trade is no longer a man's world.

Toys like the Silver Bullet or feather snappers or pleasure pearls demand a sales professional who knows her market, knows her product and knows that one of the best ways to sell such delights for the bedroom is to start . . . in the living room. The roomful of women at a weekly training session for the company Passion Parties -- a top-seller of sexual enhancement products that has seen its Tupperware-style approach to sales explode in South Florida in the past few years -- know this all too well.

Ask.com becoming the search engine that could.

The butler is dead, the name has been tweaked, but executives at Ask.com would like to remind the world that they are still very much in business. In fact, they're actually doing pretty well these days. "We certainly are the underdog. We're certainly living in a Google world," Ask.com Chief Executive Jim Lanzone said. "But Ask is anything but small compared to the rest of the Web. We're the fourth-ranked search engine and one of the top 10 Web properties." Just this week, the portal Lycos announced that it had chosen Ask.com to replace Microsoft for its natural search listings and Google for sponsored listings.

'Sexist' Austrian urinals dumped on eBay.

Four "sexist and misogynist" urinals have been removed from a public toilet in Vienna and offered for sale on eBay, Reuters reports. The offending pissoirs - lovingly sculpted by local artist Rudolf Scheffel and installed in "toilet-bar Vienna", next to the National Opera - caused a bit of a rumpus during the run-up to the 1 October parliamentary elections when they were "used by political party supporters attending rallies nearby". Although the urinals had been in service for three years, this political exposure provoked women's groups to slam the offensive porcelain, which resulted in its removal.

Key Evangelical Quits Amid Gay Sex Claim.

The president of the National Association of Evangelicals, an outspoken opponent of gay marriage, has given up his post while a church panel investigates allegations he paid a man for sex. The Rev. Ted Haggard resigned as president of the 30 million-member association Thursday after being accused of paying the man for monthly trysts over the past three years. Haggard, a married father of five, denied the allegations, but also stepped aside as head of his 14,000-member New Life Church pending an investigation."I am voluntarily stepping aside from leadership so that the overseer process can be allowed to proceed with integrity," he said in a statement. "I hope to be able to discuss this matter in more detail at a later date. In the interim, I will seek both spiritual advice and guidance."

Porn key in DVD war?

There has been a lot of speculation about whether the global porn industry will have a big influence on which of Sony Blu-Ray or Toshiba HD-DVD win the next-generation DVD format war. This speculation is based on the fact that the pornographic industry played a key role in determining the winner of the video tape format war between Betamax and VHS in the 80's. VHS allowed multiple, competing, licensed manufacturers and this was the biggest factor why it won the format war in the 80's. The porn industry supported the VHS format since the Betamax was proprietary right of Sony Corporation. Those speculating that the porn industry will have an impact on the next format have forgotten one little detail that has changed the world in the last ten years: the internet.

A man who was sexually abusing a young girl in his home was arrested after he transmitted images of the assault via the Internet to an undercover detective, police said Thursday. The girl, a preschooler, was rescued two hours later in what Toronto police's child exploitation unit said was its first case of observing a live assault. "My first reaction was that I wanted to reach through the monitor and grab the child," said Detective Paul Krawczyk, the undercover officer who witnessed the alleged assault Sunday. He alerted police in St. Thomas, a city in southwestern Ontario where police believed the man lived, and they were able to track him down in two hours.

Viewing child porn not a crime, panel rules.

Just looking at child pornography on the Internet is not a crime under Pennsylvania law, a state Superior Court panel ruled yesterday. For prosecutors to charge someone with illegally possessing child porn, they must show the person knowingly saved the images, according to the three-judge panel. If the state Legislature wants to criminalize the mere viewing of child porn on Web sites, then it needs to change the law, the panel ruled. The case, which marked the first time the court addressed the issue, involved a Delaware County man who admitted knowingly viewing 370 child-porn images online. But the judges ruled he could not be convicted of possessing child porn because he did not know his computer was storing the photos. "We note that it is well within the power of the Legislature to criminalize the act of viewing child pornography on a Web site without saving the image," Judge Richard B. Klein wrote for the court. "The language used in [the statute], however, is simply 'possession.' Because this is a penal statute with an ambiguous term when it comes to computer technology, it must be construed strictly and in favor of the defendant."

UK touts itself as online gambling haven: But will extradite to US if asked.

The UK will set itself up as an online gambling haven but will extradite executives to the US if asked, according to Sports Minister Richard Caborn. The US effectively banned online gambling with a new law earlier this year, and Caborn and Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell outlined plans to welcome internet gambling companies to the UK and regulate them. Jowell criticised the US's stance, saying the UK will not follow suit. "We do not support the approach the United States has taken," she said. "The enormous risk of prohibition is that it forces the industry underground."

Cherry Hill renewal zone might stymie porn shop.

Most don't dispute that parts of a three-block stretch of Route 70 the township is now eyeing for its latest redevelopment project have seen better days. Elizabeth Zanghi says Blossoms of Cherry Hill, her florist shop, is due a new coat of paint. And Jacqueline Clark, an agent at Granite Insurance, laments the vacant storefronts and overall lack of change. But make no mistake, say people in the proposed redevelopment area about the township's motivation. It's all about the porn. "Some of my customers are council people and they tell me things," Napolitano said. "They're running out of ideas on how to block this thing. This is their latest idea. But are we going to have to suffer because of it?"

Dell pulls rug from under resellers.

Although famous for its direct sales model Dell has always sold a fair amount of kit through the channel - dealers and systems integrators. But not anymore. Dell will no longer discount bulk orders of Inspiron or Dimension machines. In fact it won't support any reseller who is selling to consumers. This just over a year since Dell was actively wooing resellers. The Reg was contacted by an irate Dell reseller. He's been buying discounted Dell machines for three years and selling them to tech-savvy, and margin-savvy, punters. He reckons he does between twenty and thirty thousand pounds worth of business at a time - or about £90, 0000 a year. The first he heard of the change was when he rang his account manager and was told he was no longer getting any discounts. He told us: "Less than a year ago Dell were running events to encourage resellers and now they're pulling the rug out from under us. I'm considering my options now but I'm already talking to HP - who seem willing to work with resellers, I've already got an HP account manager."

MS climbs-down over Vista licensing.

Microsoft has backed down to fierce criticism over proposed licensing terms for Windows Vista to allow users to uninstall the forthcoming operating system and install it on another PC. Previously the software giant was only going to permit one re-install before obliging users to re-purchase the operating system, if they wanted it to function properly. Terms regarding the license-to-device assignment of the retail versions of the OS (including Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) have been revised to state: "You may uninstall the software and install it on another device for your use. You may not do so to share this license between devices." News of the rethink came in a posting on the Windows Vista blog by product manager Nick White who explains that the software giant has come to realise that the original terms, geared to fighting piracy, were restrictive to the point that they might alienate hardware enthusiasts.

GooTube's Porn Opportunists.

People have been making amateur porn and uploading it to YouTube since its inception; after all, it's human nature to sexualize any new technology. Smart online sites like Second Life, while not a sex site, take this need to sexualize as a grown-up given. In their architecture and business model, they just sort of budget in that adult users will use a certain percentage of their world for sex, and set up all the necessary precautions to make this a safe and sane (and even fun) experience for everyone, and easily avoided if you prefer real estate to RealDolls. According to Linden Labs/Second Life's Catherine Smith, "All 'adult content' is confined to Mature sims in Second Life and takes place behind closed doors." But in the aftermath of Google's acquisition of YouTube, YouTube's methods of trying to control questionable content and Terms of Use (TOU) enforcement are emerging as clumsy at best, and highly exploitable at worst. Even so, YouTube's policies on porn and adult content have opened up a whole new market for an ever-growing roster of upload-it-yourself smut sites, while raising some interesting questions about businesses whose TOU and operational models turn a blind eye to the inevitable intersection of sex and technology.

Even You Can Password Protect a Directory (and a File).

Sometimes the easiest thing seems nearly impossible – especially when it's something we've already decided beforehand is too difficult to even attempt. With me, that turned out to be the .htpasswd file and all the accompanying "mystical, technical whatevers" that also went into making one. But, much like the Seuss's tale of Green Eggs and Ham, once I finally actually looked into it – and found the right tools and a couple of good examples – it turned out to be relatively simple. Yes, even you can do it! So, here then is how to protect your directories. In fact, we'll go through the normal method plus a very sweet way of doing it in PHP as well. (No, don't be intimidated by that!) Again, trust me, this is easy as pie. If I can do it, you can too.

ICANN warns mistake on non-English Web addresses could 'permanently break Internet'.

The organization that oversees global Internet functions warned Wednesday that a mistake in a creating more Web addresses using non-Latin letters could "permanently break the Internet." The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, made the warning at a U.N.-organized conference on the future of the Internet. A more multilingual Internet is a key issue at the forum, with future Web growth predicted in developing countries where the Latin alphabet is often unfamiliar. "ICANN expects that these final tests and discussions will reach a resolution by the end of 2007," CEO Paul Twomey said in a statement. "But this is no simple task. If we get this wrong, we could very easily and permanently break the Internet." Websites have long been available in non-Latin alphabets, and more recently Internet addresses can also contain non-Latin portions — but the technology for full addresses is still being developed. Patrik Falstrom, a consulting engineer with Cisco Systems who is working on the project, said the venture is riddled with difficulties. "We have 6,000 languages in the world. So should we register the name of countries — like Greece — in all 6,000?" Falstrom said.

UTube sues YouTube.

A dealer of used tube and pipe equipment filed a lawsuit this week hoping to strip YouTube Inc. of its domain name. Universal Tube and Rollform Equipment Corp., based in Perrysburg, Ohio, says that confusion between its Web site, utube.com, and youtube.com is damaging its reputation and costing the company thousands of dollars. The firm filed its suit against YouTube Monday in the U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio. Since Google Inc. announced in early October that it plans to purchase YouTube, visitors to utube.com have skyrocketed, from a few thousand per month to more than 70,000 per day, Universal Tube said in its suit. That extra traffic has crashed Universal Tube's servers several times forcing the company to switch Internet service providers, at an additional monthly cost, in order to handle the increased traffic.

Broadband Access: A Hotel Must-Have for Biz Travelers.

A struggle is taking place between frequent business travelers and hotels over high-speed Internet access, with guests demanding free access and hotels trying to recoup their costs. Hotels generally do not employ full-time IT staff, choosing instead to outsource the task of connecting and supporting hundreds of guest rooms with around-the-clock, high-speed Internet access that's robust enough to service conferences, meetings and crunch times. Hotels generally charge between US$10 to $20 a night for speeds that are usually equivalent to a T1 line. The charges don't sit well with guests, said David Lee, CEO of XoomCRM, a vendor of customer relationship management software. Lee, who travels about two weeks out of every month for business, feels that at this point high-speed Internet access is an amenity, similar to free coffee in the room. While hotel stays are expensible, Lee feels so strongly about it he said it would influence where he stays.

Cuba: We're forced to 'finance' the Internet.

A Cuba government official told a United Nations summit here that the U.S. government was to blame for the poor Internet access that its citizens endure. Juan Fernandez, a government official in the Cuba's Commission of Electronic Commerce, on Wednesday assailed the U.S. government's economic embargo and argued that, as a result, poorer countries are "financing" the Internet. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan appointed Fernandez to a high-level working group two years ago. Fernandez's only problem was that a longtime Internet engineer and researcher was present and challenged those claims. Bill Woodcock, research director of the nonprofit Packet Clearing House who has set up Internet exchange points in Latin America and other developing nations, replied by saying that the Cuban government's problems stem from its own telecommunications monopoly and its official censorship policies.

Bomb Blows Out PayPal Window.

An explosive device blew out a thick, plate-glass window Tuesday evening at the Silicon Valley headquarters of PayPal, the online payments unit of eBay. No injuries resulted when what local fire officials said was an explosive device shattered a 6-foot-square window on the ground floor of the four-story building in San Jose. The explosion occurred outside a building exit. Investigators were still trying to determine the nature of the device. "Whatever it was, it disintegrated," San Jose Fire Department Capt. Jose Guerrero said. "Whatever caused this was pretty strong." About 45 employees were working in the PayPal offices when the explosion occurred at 7:24 p.m., eBay spokesman Hani Durzy said. Most employees had left the building early ahead of the Halloween holiday celebrations, he said. "We have no reports concerning threats," Durzy said. "We are still investigating and we are working with local and federal authorities."

Mining for Keyword Gold.

Much has been written on the topic of keyword research by other SEOs. I, myself have written extensively on the topic of research and selecting the best keywords for an optimization campaign. Without trying to restate anything that has already been written, (at least by me) let me present a few ideas that can help you identify all of the possible keyword phrases that you could benefit from. Over the years, our keyword selection process has become quite refined. Looking over the research we've done in years past, most is good, but doesn’t live up to the 5-phase keyword research and selection process we use today. The first and most important step in our research process is to identify the site's major core terms. If you've read through the previous series of articles linked above you'll note that our process has evolved slightly since then. Identifying core terms (what we called “keyword themes”) used to come later in our research process but we've found that by knowing all the main and/or relevant core terms, you’re better able to find all the most important phrases.

Most domain names are sold for a few hundred or thousand dollars (as opposed to an original registration price of $10 or so) while particularly attractive domains - such as hell.com - can fetch six figure sums. However, Finish security firm F-Secure has discovered that alongside the sale of such innocuous domains as filmlist.com comes the resale of domains that obviously belong to banks or other financial institutions. Sedo.com, for example, is reselling domains like chasebank-online.com, citi-bank.com and bankofameriuca.com. "Why would anybody want to buy these domains unless they are the bank themselves - or a phishing scammer?", F-Secure asks.

Paris - donning her own version of the classic Playboy Bunny outfit - did her usual routine, dancing on a table and lip-syncing as her single - "Stars Are Blind " - played. Suzhou busy pulling down porn star posters.

Suzhou City has been busy pulling down posters of the international healthcare forum from its streets because it unknowingly used a Japanese porn star's picture on it, Kuaibao, a Nanjing-based newspaper reported today. The city put up numerous posters for the second General Assembly and Conference of the Alliance for Healthy Cities, which was held from Saturday to Monday, Kuaibao said. More than 400 mayors, health experts and scholars from cities of 21 member countries and regions attended the conference. On one-third of the poster is a picture of a "nurse" in a pink uniform, holding a large syringe in her hands. It has attracted many people's attention. Some passers-by even said they might have seen the "nurse" before. Soon after, a netizen pointed out that the woman was Japanese porn star Aoi Minori. In the original full-sized picture of Minori, it shows her legs with her panties half taken-off. The lower part of the picture was cut in the poster.

Read This Before You Submit to Web Directories.

As the number of websites grow everyday, it is becoming increasingly difficult for a new site to attain good rankings on search engines. Since major search engines factor link popularity heavily into their ranking algorithms, building relevant links to your site is perhaps the single most important component of search engine optimization. For a new site with no or few inbound links, buying text links on more established related sites could provide a boost to your link popularity. But this strategy could prove prohibitively expensive, especially in a highly competitive market where you'd have to buy lots of links to catch up with the competition. Web directory listing represents a viable alternative to link buying. Apart from driving traffic to your site through direct referrals, web directories provide one-way inbound links to your site, boosting your link popularity and ultimately improving your search rankings.
