Federal case may redefine child porn.

Jeff Pierson is a photographer whose action shots of hopped-up American autos laying waste to the asphalt at Alabama dragways have appeared in racing magazines and commercial advertisements. Pierson's Web site boasted he has the "most wonderful wife in the world and two fantastic daughters." And until recently, he ran a business called Beautiful Super Models that charged $175 for portraits of aspiring models under 18. In a federal indictment announced this week, the U.S. Department of Justice accused Pierson, 43, of being a child pornographer--even though even prosecutors acknowledge there's no evidence he has ever taken a single photograph of an unclothed minor. Rather, they argue, his models struck poses that were illegally provocative. "The images charged are not legitimate child modeling, but rather lascivious poses one would expect to see in an adult magazine," Alice Martin, U.S. attorney for the northern district of Alabama, said in a statement.

Supplementary Results.

Hey, I have been searching around forums and such, trying to get an answer and can't seem to find one. What determines whether pages get sent to the supplemental or omitted results section of Google? The closest info I could find is that means that there is duplicate content. However, on my reciprocal links pages, there is no unique content as I'm sure those links are posted on many hundreds of other websites duplicated across the web. What can I do to get my currently "omitted results" pages into the main index section of Google? Thanks in advance for your help. Answer: This is a great question and one that, astonishingly, I have never been asked which made it even more fun to answer. First, however, I want to provide a little background for readers that may not be familiar with this topic.

Google drops answers.

Google has decided to close its answers service after four years in operation. From the end of this week it will no longer respond to questions submitted to the Google Answers site. The project started as a “rough idea” by Google founder Larry Page. A team of more than 800 people regularly contributed on a diverse range of topics requested by users who would set a price between $2 and $200 for a correct answer. Contributors would then pick up 75 per cent of the fee. Questions submitted ranged from whether animal bone ash is used as a filtering process in sugar (yes), to can you get a suntan or sunburn through glass? (yes, but it takes longer apparently). Explaining the decision to close the Google Answers site a statement on the official Google blog said: “Google is a company fuelled by innovation, which to us means trying lots of new things all the time - and sometimes it means reconsidering our goals for a product.” It said: “Google Answers was a great experiment which provided us with a lot of material for developing future products to serve our users.

Appeals Court Upholds Injunction on Illinois Videogame Law.

Good news for videogame companies; bad news for moms: The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit has upheld the U.S. District Court’s December 2005 ruling that an Illinois law banning the sale of sexually explicit videogames to minors is unconstitutional. Though the Illinois law—spearheaded by Gov. Rod Blagojevich—would have categorized certain videogames as being “obscene for minors” and mandated that retailers include a four-inch-square “18” rating on the box, the appeals court countered that the serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value of the games should be taken into consideration when determining their suitability for children.

Mobile phone porn sales on the rise.

Porn providers are definitely not feeling blue when it comes to mobile phone sales. Rather, they see a red-hot future for their product, based on sales so far and an industry projection. JupiterResearch says that so far this year, the mobile phone porn industry has racked up sales of US$1.4 billion. The research company expects that figure to get up to US$3.3 billion in the next five years. That figure can be adjusted for inflation, of course, but it's primarily due to the expected wide availability of 3G video delivery, which will reach new heights in the next few years. That and the fact that the more people know about stuff like this, the more they'll explore and buy and spread the word.

Birmingham studio linked to porn case.

The Brookwood photographer accused of providing a Florida Web site with photographs of underage girls in sexually explicit poses has a photography studio in Birmingham. Jill Ellis, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office, said Wednesday that she could not discuss whether the photographs Jeff Pierson provided to Fort Lauderdale, Fla.--based Webe Web were of his customers, or even if the customers were aware federal charges had been filed against him. Officials said at least 16 of the girls on the Web site were from Alabama.

Supreme Court mulls over patent law.

Tuesday at the U.S. Supreme Court, the justices heard arguments concerning a basic tenet of patent law. In addition to being new, any invention for patent must be deemed "nonobvious" over what is already known, i.e., the innovation must represent some technological advance -- even if slight. The case KSR v. Teleflex involves an innovation in automotive technology marketed by the patentee (Teleflex) to Ford and allegedly infringed by KSR. The crux of the arguments on appeal, however, is the legitimacy of a legal test for obviousness articulated by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the one appellate court designed to hear all patent appeals. Another important issue is whether that test comports with the prior case law or precedent of the Supreme Court. Underlying the case are the growing tensions over the patent system. The Supreme Court has taken on numerous patent-related cases in the last year, and the patent bar expects some changes -- albeit none drastic -- from the Court. In KSR, it is likely that the Supreme Court will reverse the Federal Circuit, sending the case back to the trial court for further findings.

Linking Strategies: To Buy or Not to Buy.

Buying text links for your website is a highly controversial subject online. Like it or not, approve of the practice or disapprove, it does exist and there are many website owners who are doing it. I'm not going to debate the issue one way or the other; just shed some light on what some consider a "gray subject." So why would you want or need to buy a text link on another website? It all goes back to "link popularity." Search engines look at how many other sites are linking to yours when deciding on your ranking. Granted, this is just one criterion, but nevertheless an important one to pay attention to.

Leave out your unique paths and file names. Someone else has had the same problem, and some nice person will have posted a solution. 2. If it's a server error, repeat what caused the error. Go quickly to the error log on your web hosting control panel. Any clues there? 3. Read the README file. Have it open on-screen when you're setting up the script.

Web 2.0: Ingredients For A Site Makeover.

Web 2.0, The Long Tail, social networking, tagging, Ajax -- so many new catch phrases, but so little time to understand their value. Yet you ignore the new lingo at your own peril; enterprises that put up plain-Jane Web sites today risk turning away the more discerning browsing customer. Consider that it just might be time to do a Web site makeover. However, matching your needs with the right Web 2.0 developer isn't an easy task. The problem is that nowadays, just putting up a page of links and a couple of images isn't engaging enough to attract visitors to your little spot of cyberspace. "Google has lifted expectations for Web applications," said Bob Matsuoka, the CTO of RunTime Technologies, a Web tools and software company. Today's sites need more interaction and have more complexity. Ajax -- or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML -- "is the 'new new thing' and I'm sure it will be used unnecessarily in a lot of instances until the hype dies down," said George Olsen, the principal of Interaction by Design, a user-experience, design, and consulting firm, with his tongue firmly in cheek.

What is XHTML?

We have all heard of HTML. HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. What is a hypertext markup language, you ask? It is a language for specifying how certain text should appear. When you design a web page, you want certain content or text to be displayed in a specific way. You may want some text to appear in bold or italics, while other text you may want to display larger or in color. HTML is not the only type of markup language. There are markup languages that apply to other types of applications, such as word processing or other software applications. However, HTML was by far the most important markup language ever created, as it became the standard for displaying information on what is now known as the world wide web, or internet.

Duplicate Content SPAM.

We're a very small company with an 11 year website history, with web development resources somewhere between quite miniscule and non-existent. Nonetheless, SEO has been a keen focus of awareness since before it was called that, and up until that infamous "Florida" event 3 or so years ago, we did very well in the SERPs. Over the years a number of people have worked on the code comprising our site, and while there is nothing egregiously, obviously wrong with our content, no one knows if now we're being penalized for something 'lurking' in our code that may be left over from yesteryear and never found and rooted out. The biggest worry and source of disagreement seems to involve "duplicate content". Two questions: (1) is there a fast way to ensure elimination of all code that could be found objectionable to major SE 'anti-spam' filtering? and, (2) is there any way to learn how the SE algorithms define "duplicate content", e.g., is it a matter of word-for-word duplicity, or would a site get penalized even for re-worded content that had the same general meaning -- appearing on more than one page?

He added that library computers have filters, but the law requires them to be turned off if a patron over 18 requests.

Are Search Engine Rankings That Important?

What's more important, conversion or rankings? On one side you'll get the argument that if you achieve top rankings (which drives traffic) but you cannot convert your visitors substantially, your rankings are then wasted. On the other side you’ll hear that if you build your site and are able to generate a substantial conversion rate, but don't attain top positions in the rankings (and therefore obtain less traffic), then you won't have anybody to convert. It's the modern chicken or the egg question as it pertains to marketing online. Assuming even for a second that you had to sacrifice one for the other, which should you choose?

Spyware Operators Settle with FTC.

Two notorious spyware operators settled charges last week with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Both John Robert Martinson, the principal owner of Mailwiper, and Odysseus Marketing and its principal, Walter Rines, drew the FTC's attention for their secret downloads lurking behind free downloads of screensavers, anti-spyware and peer-to-peer (P2P) software. The settlement imposes a $1.86 million fine on Martinson and Mailwiper, although all but $40,000 is suspended because of their inability to pay. Odysseus and Rines agreed to pay a $1.75 million fine with only $10,000 due because of their financial situation. Should the court find that any of the defendants misrepresented their financial condition, the entire fine will become due.

Bot spreads through anti-virus, Windows flaws.

University security experts warned administrators on Monday that a bot program has started to spread by exploiting five patched Microsoft vulnerabilities and a six-month-old flaw in Symantec's anti-virus software. The bot program, identified as W32.Spybot.ACYR by Symantec, has compromised a small number of systems at various universities, including about 30 systems at the University of Arkansas and another 150 systems at the University of New South Wales in Australia. The spread of the bot software became noticed because of an inordinate amount of traffic to the network port number used by Symantec's software - both the Internet Storm Centre and the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (REN-ISAC) reported spikes in traffic to port 2967. While network data from the ISC and the REN-ISAC suggests that more than a 1,000 systems may have been compromised, an accurate tally was not immediately available.

Li: China's anti-porn law outdated.

Prominent Chinese sociologist on sex issues Li Yinhe has sparked another debate by arguing that the life sentence given to the man who created China's largest pornographic website is unfair. She argued that the law against producing, selling and propagating obscene products should be overthrown. The Taiyuan Intermediate People's Court in north China sentenced Chen Hui on November 22 for creating Qingseliuyuetian, which translates roughly as "Pornographic Summer". They also ordered that 100,000 yuan, or 12,500 US dollars, be confiscated from him. Sociologist Li Yinhe called China's anti-pornography law outdated in a blog entry on November 23, arguing that China is the only modern society in the world with such a law. She also claimed the law conflicts with the national constitution, which entitles all Chinese citizens to freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

Why Aren't You Marketing With Testimonials?

You mean you really aren't? Lots of experts have noticed that there are too few e-commerce sites using testimonials. In the brick-and-mortar world, testimonials have been used for decades. They provide a very low-cost and effective tool for adding credibility to your promotional message. And credibility is what you need in order to convert prospects to sales. The majority of consumers say that knowing and trusting the sender is the key factor in determining whether they would open an email. With email open rates declining, trust becomes more and important in getting your message across effectively.

RSS feeds have made it easy to monitor and track news stories, blog posts and certain websites for important updates. RSS is great, but it’s not everywhere. For tracking what you can't with RSS, we have developed the CodeMonitor Page Tracking tool.

Women may respond to porn, but not in a way that counts.

Last month, researchers at McGill University in Canada reconfirmed what we'll call the porn paradox: When hooked up to instruments measuring sexual arousal, men and women reacted with equal speed when watching pornographic films. This raises several questions, including why women are so much less likely than men to consider viewing porn a valuable use of our time. But the type of material used in the study also raises broader questions about the effects of porn on both sexes.Irv Binik, who led the research, said he used special sex films borrowed from the Kinsey Institute in Indiana. One was predetermined to be arousing to men, another to women, though Binik says they both looked the same to him. Both showed heterosexual couplings. Why do any of us find it arousing to watch films of other people having sex? These people are obviously busy. They're not inviting you to join them. For men at least, British zoologist Robin Baker has an interesting hypothesis: The pornography industry owes its billions to an ancient animal instinct still seen in rats and monkeys: If a male of one of those species runs across a pair mating, the onlooker will not only become aroused at the sight but will move sperm into the urethra. Which means, as Baker puts it, "he's loaded and ready to fire."

Spam Volumes Continue to Soar.

Spam is reaching unprecedented levels according to a survey released earlier this month by Internet security vendor Postini. The firm reported a 59 percent increase in spam from September to November, when it processed nearly 70 billion e-mail connections. Unwanted e-mail has now reached a whopping 91 percent of all e-mail, it said. By most measures, spam has been increasing steadily. Postini, for instance, noted that daily volumes rose by 120 percent over the last 12 months. Still, a 59 percent spike over a three-month period is significant, although Postini also noted that e-mail traffic in general rose during the same time period, registering 10 million more connections in October, compared to September. "Spammers are increasingly aggressive and sophisticated in their techniques, and protection from spam has become a front-burner issue again," said Daniel Druker, executive vice president of marketing at Postini.

Google flaw adds phishing hole to Web sites.

A security flaw in Google's search appliances could expose Web sites that use the products to information-stealing phishing attacks, experts warned Monday. The Google Search Appliance and Google Mini are used by organizations including banks and universities to add search features to Web sites. A flaw in the way the systems handle certain characters makes it possible to craft a Web link that looks like it points to a trusted site, but when clicked serves up content from a third, potentially malicious site. "This vulnerability affects a lot of very large Web sites," John Herron, a security expert who maintains the NIST.org site, said in an e-mail. "It basically allows a virtual defacement of a Web site when following a malicious link."

Russia and US set up copyright hotline.

The US and Russia will set up a copyright hotline so that information about copyright infringement can be swapped between the two nations. The US says that it will train Russia in how to battle copyright theft. These are just two elements of the an emerging agreement between Russia and the US which Russia hopes will pave the way for its entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The US is thought to have blocked Russia's entry on several grounds, one of which was its record on copyright abuse. Russia's copyright protection laws are weaker than those in the US and many European countries, as evidenced by the fact that controversial music website Allofmp3.com claims to operate legally in Russia but would be shut down by now in many other countries.

EU Says More Than Half E-Mails Are Spam.

Unsolicited e-mails continue to plague Europeans and account for between 50 and 80 percent of all messages sent to mail inboxes, the European Commission said Monday. EU Media Commissioner Viviane Reding called on EU governments to step up their fight against spam, spyware and other illegal online activities and implement EU rules to improve Internet safety. An EU report found that only two EU nations _ the Netherlands and Finland _ were making inroads in enforcing the 2002 law to crack down on spam. "Spam is still ... making up to between 50 and 80 percent of the mails that we are receiving in Europe and two-thirds of that is coming from outside the European Union," said EU spokesman Martin Selmayr. Selmayr said Dutch authorities were able to reduce spam by 85 percent by using fines to get businesses to fall in line with the EU rule. The Dutch telecommunications watchdog OPTA slapped euro60,000 ($78,500) in fines on three companies late last year for sending spam, and the Commission wants other governments to act as well, Reding said. "I'd like to see other countries achieving similar results through more efficient enforcement," she said in a statement.

Rise in porn site viewers forces library to pull Internet access.

Internet access for the public at the Mount Clemens Public Library has been revoked because of an increase in the number of people looking at sexually explicit material. Advertisement The plug was pulled on the computers earlier this month after employees noticed a "large increase" in visitors using the free Internet service to access what the library termed obscene material in violation of library policies."There seemed to be a sudden increase in that kind of activity, and it was really bothering me. I thought something needed to be done," said library Director Donald E. Worrell Jr. Library staffers acknowledge there have been complaints from people who want to use the Internet terminals for legitimate reasons, but seemed to understand the rationale once it was explained.

Do these jeans make my labia look big?

There are many things women will do to be accepted by society and feel good about themselves. Makeup and designer clothes don’t even scratch the surface. Women pay hundreds of dollars for shoes that are painful to walk in. That is still not the craziest thing women do to be accepted. Plastic surgery is one of the more drastic things one can do to feel better about herself. Breast augmentation is popular; nose jobs are all over the place (sliding down MJ’s face); liposuction is the easy but costly alternative to regular exercise. When is it too much? Is anyone happy with how she looks? Is plastic surgery really for the person who’s getting it? A fad in the plastic surgery world that bothers me the most is not boob or nose jobs — I even consider lipo occasionally. The one fad that really frightens me about how self-conscious women are of their bodies is labiaplasty. That’s right — this is plastic surgery to make the labia more appealing.

'Ban porn from prisons' call.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service wants to put a stop to pornography in the country’s jails, Svenska Dagbladet reports. In September the Prison and Probation Service ordered that all pornographic material be removed from Kronobergshäktet, a detention centre in Stockholm. Previously inmates could purchase pornographic magazines from a mobile kiosk. Prisoners have also been forbidden from putting up pornographic pictures in communal areas. The reasons given for the ban are that it is insulting for female prison officers, and that there has been an increase in the number of suspected sex offenders. Among the internees in Gitta Grönlund’s section at Kronobergshäktet in Stockholm are men suspected of rape and incest. “The fact that suspected sex criminals had access to porn magazines felt very uncomfortable. “It means that with our help they can ‘make themselves horny’ and plan new crimes,” Grönlund told Svenska Dagbladet. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is considering introducing similar bans in all prisons.

Xerox seeks self-erasing paper.

During the 1970s, researchers at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center explored a software technique called "garbage collection" used for recycling computer memory. The technique allowed the automatic reuse of blocks of memory that were storing unused programs and data. Today an anthropologist at the center, Brinda Dalal, has become a self-styled "garbologist" to assist in a joint effort with chemists at the Xerox Research Center of Canada to develop self-erasing paper. The goal is to recycle paper documents produced by the Xerox's copiers--potentially an unlimited number of times.

Copyright extension a no-go: BPI reacts.

The Gowers Review of Intellectual Property will recommend the current 50 year copyright term on sound recordings is not extended, according to reports. Though the Review's opinion is not neccessarily binding on the government, it will be a blow to the recording industry which had been lobbying to extend the term to 95 years - the same as in the US. The BBC said late last night that former Financial Times editor Gowers will recommend the current term remains when he delivers his Review next week alongside the Chancellor's pre-budget report. The British Phonographic Institute (BPI), which represents many record labels and related companies, today tried to downplay the significance of the leak. Chairman Peter Jamieson said: "It is really the responses of the Treasury, DTI and DCMS and not the recommendations of an independent report, that we are most interested in. It's in the government's power to ignore such a recommendation and they should do so."

Yahoo SEO Techniques.

All search engines have their own algorithms to determine the value and, therefore, positioning of websites. While the majority of SEO work tends to concentrate on Google because of the sheer weight of searches they receive it would be foolish to discount or ignore the other major search engines. Yahoo is considered one of the big three along with Google and MSN and by concentrating a little more time and effort on Yahoo optimization it is quite possible to gain a good amount of traffic. With ultra competitive keywords it may actually provide an easier way to generate search traffic than gearing all your efforts solely towards Google.

Barron's: Google shares set for fall.

Google shares, which topped a milestone price of $500 a share last week, are overvalued and poised to fall, just like peers Amazon.com and eBay did, the weekly financial newspaper Barron's reported Sunday. Barron's said Google is overvalued because it trades at 37 times next year's expected earnings and because its growth rate is slowing. It also noted that Google now has the 15th largest market capitalization among U.S.-traded shares, and its price-to-earnings ratio is two to three times higher that of similarly sized companies. Analysts predicted a 33 percent gain in Google's earnings in 2007, versus the 81 percent increase the company is on track to produce this year, Barron's said.

The academics reckon the Microsoft lifted their language switching technology in Office. They are demanding the offending versions of Office are pulled from the market and are seeking around $75m in damages from the vendor. Microsoft said it was continuing to dispute the patent’s validity. Whether the patents stand or not, Microsoft maintains its software does not infringe the patents.

New Trojan Tricks Users with Offer of Free Pornography.

Experts at SophosLabs have warned of a new spam campaign that claims to offer free explicit images and videos, in an attempt to trick users into downloading a malicious Trojan horse. According to Sophos, a weblink to the Psyme-DL Trojan is being widely circulated within emails using a variety of subject lines, invariably containing the words 'free' and 'porn'. The emails each contain a single sentence and a link to the malicious file. When clicked on, users are given a list of free content to choose from, while the Trojan attempts to download itself onto their machines. Sophos experts note that Psyme-DL exploits a Microsoft Internet Explorer vulnerability, MS06-014, and when the weblink is accessed using Firefox, a message is displayed requesting the user to change browser.

Future Evolution of Search.

The search engine world never rests. As online marketing professionals discover new ways to obtain top rankings the algorithms evolve right along side. There are two primary reasons behind the updating of ranking algorithms. To increase the quality and relevancy of the results, and to decrease the many pages of online spam. As the algorithms are updated, new ways to affect the results are discovered, and the algorithm must then be again adjusted. This is a cycle that has been around since the early days of search, and one that won't be going away any time soon. A lot has changed over the years, and the future is sure to also deliver its plethora of surprises, but there are three main factors that will always have some level of impact on your search results.

ISPs start ‘Project Cleanfeed Canada’ against child porn.

Yesterday Canada's largest ISPs, including Bell, Bell Aliant, MTS Allstream, Rogers, Shaw, SaskTel, Telus, and Videotron, announced the launch of Project Cleanfeed Canada in partnership with cybertip.ca. The project will allow the ISPs to block access to hundreds of child pornography sites. The list of sites will be generated by cybertip.ca. Project Cleanfeed, which follows a UK model, is likely to generate several responses, notably concerns about censorship and fears that this could extend to other forms of content. While some skepticism is understandable, it should be noted that cybertip.ca will implement an appeal process for content providers who believe that their content is wrongly blocked (though the list of blocked sites will not be publicly disclosed since it would provide a child pornography directory). More importantly, while some may suggest that this opens the door to other blocking - hate content, defamatory content or copyright infringement to name three - there is a crucial difference with child pornography that should prevent a similar approach. While those forms of content may raise legal issues, in the case of child pornography, it is illegal to even access the content.

Rebates are certainly a pain, but a justifiable one as long as the consumer is saving money in the end, right? No worries there. It also insulted the wives of golfers Chad Campbell, David Toms and Jim Furyk. Woods denounced the article on the opening day of Ryder Cup practice. Check Your Judgments, Eh?

You've heard people say that if you wouldn't want your boss, your spouse or your mother to know what you're doing online, you shouldn't be doing it. Or that you should consider what would happen if what you are about to say on the internet appeared on the front page of The New York Times; if that would be bad, keep it to yourself. For that matter, you've probably heard Ben Franklin's quip: "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead." It's no secret that nothing is secret anymore. If I learned anything at the Lexi.net: Your Online Identity conference, it's that our internet reputation is as slippery as Astroglide and just as difficult to put back into the bottle if it spills where we least want it. Everything we do online becomes part of our Permanent Record, and all it takes to be exposed is someone who cares enough to dig it up. The conference sessions ranged from the practical (corporate image on a budget) to the theoretical (anonymity and privacy online) to the personal (the Dooce story). Judging from my e-mail, my end-of-the-day talk about sex online inspired some folks to try something new over the weekend.

Unpatched Flaw Means Firefox Passwords Can Be Stolen.

Security experts Wednesday warned that Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox browser has an unpatched flaw that lets criminals pilfer Web site or account passwords, and said that the tactic has already been used on MySpace to steal log-in information from users of the popular social networking service.Dubbed the "Reverse Cross-Site Request" vulnerability by its discoverer, the vulnerability is in Firefox's password-saving feature. Attackers can exploit the flaw by crafting malicious HTML code that hijacks a username and password from a legitimate site, such as a blog or message forum, then transports the log-in to another site. Users would not notice that the theft had even taken place, said Robert Chapin, who reported the bug to Mozilla earlier this month.

The end of the web as we know it?

"The internet was designed with no gatekeepers over new content or services, and on a layered, end-to-end model that allows people at each level of the network to innovate free of any central control. "By placing intelligence at the edges rather than control in the middle of the network, the internet has created a platform for innovation, from voice over IP, to 802.11x Wi-Fi, to blogging. All that might never have evolved had central control of the network been required by design." Instead, Cerf fears that versions of current bills will cause "great damage to the internet as we know it". And if US telecoms companies carry on in their present fashion, he says, it is going to end in court. "Telephone companies cannot tell consumers who they can call, and network operators should not dictate what people can do online. We need to revise the FCC ruling eliminating common carriage provisions that created this problem, before we kill the goose that laid the golden egg."

Censors busy on the internet.

The government policy on internet censorship needs an immediate and sweeping rethink and change. This assumes it has a policy at all, given the current state of efforts to filter and block websites. The current effort to ''filter'' the internet, to use the word of the official censor, does little but add to the foreign perception that Thailand is under strong and constant control of a military government. The zeal of the official censor should alarm everyone whose aim is to establish a government that is accountable for its actions. Until the Sept 19 military coup, internet censors built power and ability. The Thaksin Shinawatra government occasionally tried to turn censorship into virtue by claiming it was all done on behalf of children. This is the familiar claim of all censors of course _ that they selflessly protect victims. But predictably, internet censorship under Mr Thaksin immediately turned from an anti-pornography crusade into a political act. Today, pornography is more freely accessible on the Thailand internet than ever. Censorship, meanwhile, has expanded into a secret bureaucracy which operates out of unknown offices. Censors provide neither explanation, warning nor appeal. They aim more and more at websites which are neither obscene nor a threat to children.

Revising "The Anime Encyclopedia".

Helen McCarthy has been a fan of anime for over 20 years, starting with the first British anime fanzine in the 1980's and the first continuing UK anime newsletter in 1990. Since then, she has been a pivotal figure on the British anime scene, running the first anime conventions in the United Kingdom, producing several English language anime dubs, and writing incessantly on anime for magazines, newsletters, and books. It was at McCarthy's Anime UK magazine that Jonathan Clements published his first commercial writings on anime and manga. A student of Chinese and Japanese language, Clements has been a prolific translator and author, with over 100 manga and anime translations standing next to a respected run on the famous Judge Dredd comic magazine and over a dozen books. Together, Clements and McCarthy wrote The Erotic Anime Movie Guide in 1999, and followed that up with The Anime Encyclopedia in 2001, compiling information about thousands of Japanese anime dating back to 1917. The two recently reunited to revise and expand The Anime Encyclopedia from nearly 600 pages to over 900. Toon Zone News caught up with the two via e-mail to talk about the new edition.

Granny porn one of the most popular searches on the Net.

During one of my daily Google "sex" searches (yes, I get paid to do what many of you have to hide from your boss), my eyes were assaulted by a pornographic image of an elderly woman, to whom gravity had not been kind. The juxtaposition of sex and old age shouldn't be funny, disgusting or perverse. "That's just not right," I thought, squeezing my eyes shut and knocking down my browser before anyone could see me looking. Currently granny porn is one of the most popular searches on the Net. In our youth-obsessed culture, we don't like to think about older people having active, fulfilling sex lives -- or doing the deed at all. But the fact that it's so taboo guarantees thrill-seekers will look. It's the grown-up equivalent of checking out your own booger in the Kleenex. I've sought thrills of my own, but I draw the line at naked grannies and guys humping balloons.

Panda porn pays off.

Scientists say a bid to encourage giant pandas to breed by showing them 'panda porn' has paid off. They claim to have sparked a baby boom among the endangered animals by showing them DVDs of pandas mating. "It works," Zhang Zhihe, a leading Chinese expert, told the Xinhua news agency. Pandas are notoriously poor breeders and the 'panda porn' movies were just one of many techniques used to encourage them to breed. In the first 10 months of this year 31 cubs were born in captivity in China and 28 survived, said Zhang. That's an increase from 12 births in 2005 and just nine in 2000. Of this year's births, 14 came through natural breeding, while artificial insemination or a combination of the two produced the rest. Now comes the next test - getting the trick to work outside China.
