Goodthinxx Voice Call Service to Replace Dialers.

In light of regulations enacted on the dialer pay-by-phone market, online billing company Goodthinxx has launched a voice call service that could be a safer solution for Europeans who can’t pay for their online content with a credit card. Voice Call is a way for non-U.S.-based Web surfers to pay for and then access adult content without a credit card and a way for Webmasters to attract overseas customers. “In Europe, only 30 percent of the population has a credit card. So you go to a site, you see a link that says click here to pay if you have no credit card, international calls only,” said Tanja Rahman, CEO of Goodthinxx. “It works similar to a 900 number.”

McAfee in BitDefender virus slur spat.

McAfee has distanced itself from slurs against rival AV firm BitDefender contained in sponsored ad links on Google.com. The Romanian firm was unsurprisingly upset at having its products referred to as a "virus" in ads that linked to a page offering McAfee anti-virus software (screenshot here). To make matters worse the sponsored link (with pejorative text "Remove BitDefender virus. Clean your PC if already infected") appeared when a search for "BitDefender" was performed on Google.com. Bogdan Irina, BitDefender Sales and Marketing Director, condemned the ad as "false advertising and libel".

Porn sites take old addresses.

It's 2004: Do candidates know where their cast-off campaign Web addresses are? If they don't, they had better check to see. Online pornographers may have taken them over. Geoff Davis, the Republican running for Congress in Northern Kentucky, is one of the unlucky politicians whose old site has gone porno. Geoffdavis2002.com, which once sported Davis' family photos and campaign promises, now transfers people logging in to a pornographic site - and the Davis campaign is not amused. "I think it's a shame that that exists," said Davis' campaign manager, Justin Brasell. "Geoff Davis supports limiting access to that type of filth. It's a shame it's out there. But it's a fact of life."

Four Suicides Linked to Child Porn Probe.

The government will press on with a child pornography crackdown despite the suicides of four people being investigated in the operation, an official said Saturday. Justice Minister Chris Ellison said the deaths were regrettable but vowed they would not hinder Australia's biggest crackdown on child porn, an operation that he said would likely lead to 500 arrests. "This will not deter, in any way, the investigation," he said. Two men in Victoria state and one each in Queensland and Western Australia states have killed themselves in recent days.

Orgies are the way to ease social tensions, claims US judge.

He is the conservative bastion of the US supreme court, a favourite of President Bush, and a hunting partner of the vice-president. He has argued vociferously against abortion rights, and in favour of anti-sodomy laws. But it turns out that there is another side to Justice Antonin Scalia: he thinks Americans ought to be having more orgies. Challenged about his views on sexual morality, Justice Scalia surprised his audience at Harvard University, telling them: "I even take the position that sexual orgies eliminate social tensions and ought to be encouraged."

Bank under fire for 'peddling porn'.

Anti-Porn campaigners staged a protest outside the Bank of Scotland demanding the withdrawal of a huge loan to a publishing company. Members of Scottish Women Against Pornography used yesterday’s demonstration to promote a campaign urging customers to ditch their accounts with the bank or denounce its £5 million loan to the company to fund the purchase of 45 pornographic magazines from the publisher and owner of the Daily Express newspaper, Richard Desmond. Scottish Socialist Party MSP Carolyn Leckie joined protesters on The Mound waving banners with slogans such as "Porn Peddlers Bank". The magazines, to be bought by a company called Remnant Media, include Asian Babes, Readers’ Wives, Mothers-in-Law, Barely Legal and 60 Plus.

Internet Gambling -- Regulate or Litigate?

The U.S. government decided recently to negotiate with, rather than litigate against, the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda (both referred to as Antigua) over the issue of online gaming. This decision came about after the U.S. lost an arbitration proceeding under the trade dispute resolution process of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in March. The arbitration arose out of a complaint by Antigua to the WTO in the aftermath of a U.S. move in 1998 to fight Internet gambling by bringing charges against Jay Cohen, an American then living in Antigua.

Playboy man says give customers what they want.

Alex Graham, overseeing the development of video-on-demand products across new networks for infamous content provider Playboy TV, sought to bring the industry back to first principles this afternoon by telling them that money would come from putting the consumer first and giving them what they wanted. Current TV offerings, he sugggested, were akin to making a man buying a shirt in TopShop pay for the shirt, 4 ties, 2 mini-skirts and some stockings. Whilst he might be interested in the 4 ties, the rest of it is simply of no concern to him and puts him off the whole package.

Calif. OKs Anti-Spyware, Swapping Laws.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed separate legislation designed to combat spyware and the illegal online swapping of copyright material. One bill requires people who share movies, videos and recordings on file-sharing services to provide their e-mail or physical addresses, while the other bans unauthorized installation of spyware on individual computers. But questions abound about the enforceability of both. "Every time a 14-year-old girl trades a song file and has to include her true address, that's a target for a stalker," EFF policy analyst Annalee Newitz said. The law, sponsored by a former talent agent at the William Morris Agency, Democratic Sen. Kevin Murray, limits fines for minors who don't provide their e-mail addresses to $250, or $1,000 after three violations.

Microsoft wins Smart Tags case.

A jury ruled in Microsoft's favor late on Wednesday, deciding that a feature in recent versions of Office doesn't infringe on a patent held by another software maker. In 2002, small Norwegian company Arendi Holdings filed a lawsuit charging Microsoft with violating its patent for a "method, system and computer-readable medium for addressing handling from a computer program." The complaint revolved around the Smart Tags technology, introduced with Office XP, for linking words in a document to other actions or information. For example, an Office user can use Smart Tags to automatically add a contact to his address book by clicking on a name in a document.
