Fears over adult-only service for mobiles.

Mobile phone users could be able to download pornography, violent video games and gambling sites under a program soon to be available to Optus subscribers. The company is likely to join Hutchison Telecommunications and introduce restricted-access services for its mobile customers, despite consumer group fears. Expected to be known as Optus Zoo Adult, the service would allow subscribers aged 18 and over to download adult services to their mobile phone. However, Optus acting director of mobile partners Chris Lane would not confirm speculation the carrier was about to expand its presence in the lucrative premium services market.

AdultShop sues over online mess.

Online porn broker AdultShop.com has launched a multi-million-dollar legal action against the Queensland businessmen who sold the company its online pornography division in an ill-fated deal that brought the country's corporate watchdog to the door. AdultShop bought online erotica business Today's Success from Dean Shannon and Steve Jones three years ago, paying the pair about $12 million in cash and shares only for the deal to turn sour when credit-card processing problems caused a shock profit warning and a plunge in the share price. Last year, AdultShop wrote off the remaining value of Today's Success, but yesterday it moved to recoup some of its losses when it launched legal action in the WA Supreme Court against Mr Shannon, Mr Jones and E-Millions Pty Ltd.

New Trojan Kills Adware.

A new Trojan horse program that attacks and removes troublesome advertising software, known as "adware," is circulating on the Internet, according to antivirus company Symantec. The program, called Downloader.Lunii, was discovered earlier this week. When run, it attempts to kill off computer processes and delete files used by common adware programs like Powerscan and BargainBuddy. However, Lunii is not entirely benevolent. Like other Trojan horse programs, it also modifies the configuration of Microsoft Windows machines and attempts to download files from a remote location, Symantec warns.

MS Word Security Flaw Reported.

A flaw in Microsoft Word 2000, and possibly Word 2002 as well, could be used by hackers to crash PCs or perhaps run other code on the compromised machine, a security firm said Thursday. According to an alert from Copenhagen-based Secunia, the bug in Word stems from an input validation error within the parsing of document files, and if exploited could cause a stack-based buffer overflow that in turn leads to a denial-of-service (DoS) and a crash. The bug has been confirmed in Word 2000, but also reported (though not confirmed) in Word 2002, the version in Office XP.

Google Goes After Amazon in Book Indexing.

Taking aim at Amazon.com, Google introduced a feature Wednesday that lets users search through pages of books online. The site invites publishers to include their entire books in its index, and more than a dozen publishers have signed up. Google Print will search books according to key words and return a handful of titles at the top of the results. Though Google will scan the entire text of the books, the new feature won't let people read entire books online. Publishers choose how much of the text is made available for users to browse through. Google profits by adding its contextually targeted advertising on the book pages.

Dodgy UK websites terminated.

Eight UK websites have been forced to shut down following an investigation into low-life scam operations that make claims that prove to be "too good to be true". A further 27 UK sites have been ordered to change the content on their sites while 40 are still under investigation by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The clampdown follows an international sweep by 31 countries of hundreds of sites suspected of ripping off punters. Among the trawl were sites targeting children with XXX images for mobile phones plus expensive ring tones and games. Other scams included "work at home and earn a fortune schemes", "get-rich-quick" schemes and lottery scams.

Evasive Angles and TTB Productions Appeal Cal/OSHA Citations.

Evasive Angles and TTB Productions, both Adult companies owned by T.T. Boy, have each filed a letter of intent to appeal citations from California's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) totaling $30,560 for violations of health and safety regulations related to the exposure of three performers to HIV earlier this year. The letter of intent, which was filed September 23, just eight days after the citations were issued, began an appeal process that could last more than a year. “The reason is that is there is such a huge volume of appeals working their way through the system that it takes that long to get a hearing date,” Cal/OSHA spokesperson Dean Fryer told AVN.com.

The problem with US patents.

Patent laws convey a message: If you invest a significant amount of time, energy and money in an invention, someone else can't simply come along and profit from your investment without paying you. Patents guarantee that if someone gets to recoup that investment, that someone is you. It seems fair. Without that guarantee, you might not bother to make the investment in the first place, which in turn undermines an important incentive to innovation. The potential for personal enrichment and, in the case of publicly held companies, stockholder value, is a strong incentive that encourages innovation in many fields. On these grounds, I agree that people should have a right to protect their inventions from being copied. On the other hand, some of the so-called inventions receiving patents are either too obvious to deserve a patent or are so simple, that the enrichment possibilities (should a patent be awarded) are entirely disproportionate to the investment that produced the invention.

Blocking porn legal, Korean court says.

A three-judge panel at the Seoul District Court rejected an appeal by Internet users, who claimed that the government had infringed upon their "right to pursue happiness" when it blocked access to pornography sites on the Internet. The suit had been dismissed earlier by a single judge at the same court. Twenty-one irritated Web surfers filed suit against the government and KT, the telecommunications service provider, seeking compensation for their mental distress. The court said, "The current law does not regulate or punish those who seek access to pornography sites, but several laws prohibit the manufacturing and distribution of pornography, so the government's measures are not unlawful." An Information Ministry committee asked KT in June 2002 to block access to 25 sites the committee said were pornographic.

How To Avoid Having Filters Eat Your Emails.

You've probably read 1000 times that "the money's in the list." If you're an Internet or email marketer, that's only partly true. The truth is that the money is in properly written emails, that get delivered to your list members. That last part is what most online marketers are missing! An article in the June 2004 issue of Time Magazine reported that 40% to 70% of email sent to the four major ISPs is deleted at the server. Those ISPs are MSN (including Hotmail), Yahoo, Earthlink and AOL. That simply means that there's a very good chance that your legitimate email is not getting through to those subscribers using those ISPs.

Induce Act Talks Sputter.

After four days of painstaking negotiations, technology and consumer groups said they have failed to reach a consensus with the entertainment industry on the language of the Induce Act, a proposed bill making it illegal to encourage copyright infringement. Nevertheless, the bill, introduced by Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), is still scheduled for markup in a Senate Judiciary Committee meeting Thursday, to be put in final form for a vote. The technology and consumer advocacy groups sent letters to the committee Wednesday urging them not to move forward with the legislation. In its original form, the Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act (SB2560) would hold technology companies liable for manufacturing products that encourage people to infringe copyrights.

Acacia hits Wi-Fi hotspots with page redirect royalty claim.

US wireless internet service providers have been hit with demands for hefty royalty payments from an intellectual property exploitation company claiming it owns gateway page redirection. Acacia Technologies last week began sending details of a patent it owns which details the process by which a WISP's servers redirect connected computers' browsers to a login page, Wi-Fi Networking News reports. The patent in question is 6,226,677, and was acquired by Acacia from LodgeNet. Granted in May 2001, the patent application was originally filed in January 1999, long before the Wi-Fi hotspot business emerged. Curiously, Nomadix, a company that sells network access control software to WISPs, announced earlier this year that it had been granted a similar patent, number 6,636,894. Nomadix' patent describes "systems and methods for redirecting users having transparent computer access to a network using a gateway device having redirection capability". Acacia's simply talks about "controlled communications over a global computer network".

Which Candidate Is More Tech-Friendly?

Senator John Kerry, Democratic challenger to U.S. President George Bush, would seek more government involvement on issues such as broadband adoption, cybersecurity, and spam, while Bush, if reelected, would continue to take a more market-driven approach to those issues, a panel of Washington, D.C., technology experts predicted Tuesday.Predicting the impact of a Bush or Kerry presidency on other tech-related issues proved difficult for the panel, however. Congress in 2005 is likely to start looking at ways to rewrite the Telecommunications Act of 1996, but most of that initiative will come from Congress, not the president, the panel agreed Tuesday. It's also difficult to predict the effect of the presidential election on two important issues before the U.S. Federal Communications Commission--reforming intercarrier compensation and reclaiming unused broadband spectrum.

Web Industry Still Flies Blind.

Help me out, would you? I want to find out how many people visited Wired News last month. If you did, please phone the two ratings agencies charged with figuring out who's hot and who's not in cyberspace. Just tell them I sent you. "What?" you say. "That's no way to measure a site's traffic." Of course, you're right. But it might not be any less accurate than the numbers that Nielsen/NetRatings and comScore Media Metrix come up with each month. Both employ panels of web surfers -- in Nielsen's case, about 37,000 people; comScore, 1.5 million -- who allow the companies to install monitoring software on their computers to track the websites they visit. There are also incentives: Nielsen promises $50 a year to home users ($100 if you consent to do it at work), while comScore offers free virus protection, an internet accelerator program to speed up dialup connections, and even sweepstakes prizes.

Puppet oral sex goes against grain for US censors.

The latest feature film from the creators of South Park is facing the box office kiss of death NC-17 rating because of a scene showing simulated oral sex between marionettes. The makers of Team America: World Police have reportedly gone to great lengths, modifying the offending scene nine times for submission to the Motion Picture Association of America, the US film classification authority. They are keen to secure an R rating, which would allow under-18s to see the film when accompanied by an adult. The makers, directors Matt Stone and Trey Parker and producer Scott Rudin, are contesting the MPAA classification, saying that the film doesn't show anything that's not been seen before in other R-rated movies. And besides, Rudin told the Hollywood Reporter, "our characters are made of wood and have no genitalia. If the puppets did to each other what we show them doing, all they'd get is splinters."

Spyware Bill Gets House Nod.

Anti-spyware legislation sailed through the House of Representatives on Tuesday as House leaders expressed confidence that they can work out differences with a Senate version of the bill before a planned full Senate vote Wednesday. "There are a number of senators on both sides who I am going to touch base with," said Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) at a press conference following approval of the bill on the House floor. "We're going to try to do something this week." Barton is chair of the House Commerce Committee, which handled the bill from its inception. House members are expected to enter "pre-conference" negotiations with key senators in hopes of avoiding a messy conference to reconcile the bills later. Lawmakers fear that a lengthy conference could delay final passage of anti-spyware legislation by both houses of Congress.

EBay asks for new patent trial.

EBay has asked an appeals court for a new trial over claims that its online auction house infringes patents held by Virginia-based MercExchange. After a month-long trial last year, a jury ruled that eBay's direct sales transactions, the "buy it now" option, did involve an already patented process. The court ordered eBay to pay $35m to MercExchange, a sum later reduced to $29.5m. eBay now says the jury had not been properly instructed at the time of its ruling, and that claims of patent infringement are unfounded. It argues that the MercExchange patent covers the transfer of ownership and that this part of a sale is not featured anywhere in an eBay transaction.

Sex toy creates Oz airport pandemonium.

A discarded vibrator at Queensland's Mackay airport caused pandemonium after cleaners noticed a rubbish bin humming in a suspicious manner, the Herald Sun reports. Cafeteria manager Lynne Bryant said: "It was rather disconcerting when the rubbish bin started humming furiously. We called security and next minute everybody was being evacuated while they checked it out." It was only after an hour that security declared the offending item nothing more than a "adult novelty device". It is not reported whether the authorities attempted to apprehend the person responsible for wreaking havoc with passengers' schedules. Presumably, they simply had to look for a smiling and chilled-looking woman among the screaming, terrorised travellers.

Inside the JPEG Virus.

The end of summer lull for viruses and worms continues. We're still seeing new versions of RBots, and a new Bagle, but nothing with teeth. The big news appears to be the anticipation of a viral exploit of the JPEG vulnerability that Microsoft patched earlier this month. Within days of the release of the security bulletin, there was proof of concept code available on the web. As the exploit was analyzed by various security groups, it was found that it was similar to a four year old Netscape vulnerability reported by Openwall project.

Internet a modern Trojan horse.

Karsten M. Self, who oversees a children's computer lab at a youth center in Napa, Calif., spends about a half-hour each morning electronically scanning 10 PCs. He is searching for files and traces of code that threaten to hijack the computers by silently monitoring the children's online activities or by plastering their screens with dizzying - and nearly unstoppable - onslaughts of pop-up advertisements. To safeguard the children's computers, Self has installed a battery of protective software products and new Web browsers. That has kept some - but by no means all - of the youth center's digital intruders at bay. "You would expect that you could use these systems in a safe and sane way, but the fact of the matter is that you can't unless you have a fair amount of knowledge, time to fix the problems and paranoia," he said.

Web blamed for sex craze.

Münster - German psychologists say a sharp increase in the number of people whose sex drives have gone out of control is mainly the result of pornography and sex chat on the internet. Steffen Fliegel, chairing a conference of the German Society for Research on Sexuality DGfS, said it was difficult to obtain overall figures for people who had a pathological obsession with sex, as sufferers were highly embarrassed and often do not seek help. But clinical psychologists at the meeting in the northern German city of Münster had discovered by comparing notes that there had been a sharp growth in the number of self-help groups in which sufferers offer one another advice, he said on Saturday.

Legal chill drops over cyberspace.

The Internet's Wild West days are over. What once was a bastion of free-thinking bloggers and mavericks who gave us downloadable music, is now becoming one of the most heavily regulated, and litigated, spaces on Earth, experts at an Ottawa conference on Internet law said yesterday.
"It's this ever-expanding concentric circle in terms of how they're trying to regulate online activity," said Michael Geist, a professor of Internet law at the University of Ottawa. "Everyone has the potential to be regulated." As fast as new laws are being drafted to shut them down, spammers, hackers and online gambling czars are simply packing up and disappearing into the next, less vigilant jurisdiction. Music and movie file sharers, meanwhile, can find plenty of loopholes to let them evade prosecution. So instead, lawyers are training their guns on the middlemen. To shut down a Canadian online pharmacy, for instance, a drug company might sue the courier or trucking firm that carries products across the international border. Credit card companies are being taken to court, in hopes of dissuading them from processing payments from offshore gambling sites.

Porn challenge getting harder.

After all the rejoicing over last week's success against an alleged internet trade in child pornography, today's revelation of largely unfettered internet sharing of this material is sobering. It raises issues about whether the law can ever get ahead of internet abuse and whether smart criminals have seized a vehicle that allows them to adapt quicker than can the authorities that pursue them.

October buyers' guide to motherboards in the US.

Last time the InQ had a guide about choosing motherboards, it was just over one year ago back in September 2003. Over the time, not much has changed today though except for the prevelance of s754 and s775 sockets. For sake of clarity, we will restrict ourselves to socket A, socket 754 (no 939 or 940), socket 478 and socket 775. There will be a short mention for socket 603 for what I personally believe to be a genuinely prized product. Winners should bear several features - they should be affordable, stable and available. Also today's winners will be for the USA rather than for the rest of the world. More to come in the following days.

US users know more about boobs than viruses.

U.S. computer users know more about the Janet Jackson's breast exposure than they down about their own anti-virus software, according to a survey. The survey, by a US security group, and commissioned by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), found that more than 90 per cent of Americans could remember when Jackson exposed her breasts during a half-time concert. However only 60 per cent could remember when they last updated their anti-virus software, firewall and OS.

Patent landrush threatens Wi-Fi standards.

We have examined before how patent lawsuits are threatening to stifle the adoption of wireless standards. Symbol, fresh from an intellectual property victory over rival Proxim, is the latest to assert sweeping licensing rights in 802.11 technology, while VIA is seeking to extend its proposed ‘intellectual property pool’ to WiMAX. With the emerging WiMAX and RFID wireless technologies both subject to major patent claims, as well as numerous intellectual property disputes in Wi-Fi, the arguments are growing louder that standards are kept royalty-free. This would basically give companies – particularly start-ups – the choice of keeping their inventions proprietary and seeking to build a de facto standard with a full royalty revenue stream, Qualcomm-style; or donate the innovations to industry bodies for free, but with the hope of creating a far larger market in a shorter timescale, in which to sell products and services.

Web to get dose of plain English.

The Plain English Campaign is stepping up its war against linguistic obfuscation with a new campaign in association with ebiz outfit TechnoPhobia. The plan is to promote user-friendly websites which conform to the amended Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) of 1995. As of 1 October, the DDA requires, for instance, that job adverts on websites must - by law - be "available to people of mixed ability, whether they are able-bodied, have hearing or sight difficulties, or are suffering from any physical disability". Accordingly, the Plain English Campaign and TechnoPhobia have joined forces to "promote easily understood content for the web".
